Polestar Begins Google Gemini Rollout to US Drivers

Polestar has begun rolling out Google Gemini to US drivers as of April 30, 2026, replacing Google Assistant with a conversational AI model that supports multi-turn dialogue, Gemini Live, and message translation.

Polestar today began rolling out Google Gemini to its vehicles, replacing Google Assistant with a generative AI model designed for free-flowing conversation between drivers and their cars. The rollout starts April 30, 2026, for US customers with Google built-in vehicles set to US English. Additional languages and regions will follow.

Highlights

  • Rollout begins April 30, 2026, for US drivers with vehicles set to US English; other languages and regions to follow.
  • Available on all Polestar models with Google built-in except the Polestar 1; no additional hardware required.
  • Gemini Live activates with the prompt “Hey Google, let’s talk” for hands-free conversational interaction.
  • System adds real-time message translation between supported languages.

From Commands to Conversations

The Gemini integration introduces contextual understanding and multi-turn dialogue inside the cabin. Drivers no longer need to memorize specific phrasing or restart a query if they forget a detail. The assistant can interpret complex intent and ask follow-up questions, making the interaction closer to speaking with a passenger.

The previous Google Assistant experience required distinct, structured commands such as “Hey Google, navigate to a supermarket.” Under Gemini, the same task can be handled through a single conversational query. For example, a driver can say: “Hey Google, let’s find a supermarket on the way home, and let Joe know I am on my way.”

Hans Bleckert, Connected Car Manager at Polestar, said: “Google Gemini represents a fundamental shift for Polestar drivers and how they interact with their vehicles. Together with Google, we replace outdated command structures with an advanced AI model that enables free-flowing conversation between Polestar vehicles and drivers. And this is only the beginning. With Gemini, we enter a new period of possibilities with the focus on creating better user experiences.”

Gemini Live and Translation

Beyond standard vehicle queries, Polestar is bringing Gemini Live into the car. The hands-free conversation tool activates with the prompt “Hey Google, let’s talk.” From there, drivers can use it to brainstorm gift ideas, dinner recipes, shopping lists, and similar open-ended tasks while keeping their hands on the wheel.

The system also integrates translation directly into messaging. Drivers can dictate a text in English and ask Gemini to translate it to Swedish, or any other supported language, before sending. The capability is built on the multilingual reach of large language models rather than a separate translation engine.

Rollout Mechanics

Eligible drivers will see a pop-up on the center display prompting them to opt in or decline. Over time, Gemini will fully replace Google Assistant in Polestar vehicles. The update requires no additional hardware and will be available across the lineup, with the first-generation Polestar 1 excluded. The initial release covers US-based drivers with their language set to US English; further regions and languages have not been dated.

The deployment continues a multi-year integration between Polestar and Google. Polestar’s infotainment runs on Android Automotive OS with Google built-in, which made the transition to Gemini achievable through a software update rather than a hardware change. The Polestar 2 was the first vehicle to launch with Android Automotive OS in 2020, and the architecture has since been carried across the brand’s expanding lineup.
