BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosí is embarking on a significant expansion to accommodate the production of its latest electric models, including the Neue Klasse starting from 2027. This development involves the initiation of a high-voltage battery assembly line and broadening of various production capacities. The company has announced an investment of 800 million euros to enhance the Mexican manufacturing site, aligning with its global strategy for more integrated and resilient production.
Key Highlights
- Initiation of high-voltage battery assembly at Plant San Luis Potosí.
- Expansion of the body shop and logistics areas by nearly 30,000 square meters.
- Investment in photovoltaic systems to double the output from solar panels.
- Comprehensive skills development programs for employees.

Battery Production Aligned with Vehicle Manufacturing
In adherence to its “local for local” principle, the BMW Group strategically places its battery assembly facilities close to its vehicle production plants globally. This setup includes new sites in Debrecen, Shenyang, near Spartanburg, and Irlbach-Straßkirchen, aiming to buffer against potential geopolitical and economic disruptions. By keeping production stages close, the company not only enhances operational efficiency but also reduces the environmental impact of its processes.
Milan Nedeljković, a member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, emphasized the importance of this strategy: “The battery assembly in San Luis Potosí will be part of our global production network. For our new sixth-generation e-drive alone, we are building five locations on three continents.”
Technological Innovations and Environmental Initiatives
The BMW Group is set to introduce its newly developed round cells in the Neue Klasse, which promise a 20 percent increase in energy density and a 30 percent faster charging speed. The resultant 30 percent extension in vehicle range marks a significant enhancement in battery technology.
Additionally, the expansion of renewable energy solutions is a priority, with plans to double the photovoltaic output at the San Luis Potosí plant. This expansion is aimed at generating more than 20 percent of the plant’s current electricity needs directly on-site.

Further Development of Infrastructure and Skills
The ongoing developments at Plant San Luis Potosí also include enlarging the body shop by nearly 20,000 square meters and the assembly and logistics spaces by almost 10,000 square meters. Harald Gottsche, president and CEO of BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosí, highlighted the dual benefits of this expansion: “With this further development of our site, we are also gearing up in Mexico for the launch of the next BMW model generation.“
The plant is enhancing its commitment to employee training with an extensive skills development program. This initiative ensures that the workforce is well-prepared for the future demands of automobile production, particularly in high-voltage systems and robotic manufacturing processes.
As BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosí continues to evolve, it not only stands at the forefront of automotive manufacturing innovations but also significantly contributes to the economic and environmental sustainability of the region.
