Nissan Launches First U.S. Plug-in Hybrid

Nissan enters the U.S. plug-in hybrid segment with the 2026 Rogue PHEV, offering 38 miles of electric range, 248 horsepower and three-row seating for seven passengers.

Nissan unveiled the 2026 Rogue Plug-in Hybrid, marking the automaker’s entry into the U.S. plug-in hybrid electric vehicle segment. The three-row SUV combines a 20-kWh battery pack with a 2.4-liter gasoline engine to deliver an EPA-estimated 38 miles of all-electric range and 420 miles of total driving range. The vehicle debuts at the Los Angeles Auto Show from November 21-30, with dealership availability scheduled for early 2026.

Highlights

  • Dual powertrain architecture delivers 248 horsepower, 332 lb-ft of torque with standard intelligent all-wheel drive across two trim levels
  • EPA ratings show 64 MPGe in electric mode and 26 mpg combined when operating on gasoline, with 7.5-hour Level 2 charging time
  • Three-row configuration accommodates seven passengers with 12.8 to 64.7 cubic feet of cargo capacity depending on seat configuration
  • Standard safety suite includes 11 airbags, ProPILOT Assist 1.1, and Nissan Safety Shield 360 technologies across both SL and Platinum grades

Powertrain Configuration

The Rogue Plug-in Hybrid employs a dual-motor electric drive system paired with a naturally aspirated gasoline engine. The 20-kWh lithium-ion battery pack enables all-electric operation for local trips, while the hybrid system extends total range beyond 400 miles.

Total system output reaches 248 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, exceeding the standard Rogue’s performance specifications. Intelligent All-Wheel Drive comes standard on both available trim levels.

Drive Modes and Energy Management

Operators can select between three energy management modes:

  • EV Mode: Prioritizes battery power for zero-emission driving
  • Save Mode: Preserves battery charge for later use
  • Charge Mode: Uses the gasoline engine to replenish battery capacity

The system offers seven drive modes to optimize power delivery and torque distribution: Normal, Power, Eco, Tarmac, Gravel, Snow and Mud. Regenerative braking operates at two levels, activated through the shift selector or e-Step one-pedal driving function.

The cargo area accepts items up to 80 inches in length when positioned horizontally behind the front seats. Maximum opening angle for rear doors reaches 70 degrees.

Market Positioning

The Rogue Plug-in Hybrid represents Nissan’s first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle for the U.S. market. The company positions the model as part of its Re:Nissan business strategy to expand electrified vehicle options.

Ponz Pandikuthira, senior vice president and chief product officer for Nissan Americas, stated the vehicle “delivers the convenience of all-electric, zero emission driving for everyday commutes while maintaining the long-range driving benefits of a gasoline engine.”

The standard 2026 Rogue continues in S, SV, Rock Creek, Dark Armor, SL and Platinum configurations with front-wheel or all-wheel drive options.
