Nissan has announced a recall for certain 2023 Ariya electric vehicles due to an inverter software error that can lead to a sudden loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.
Key Highlights:
- Recall affects 1,188 units of the 2023 Nissan Ariya
- Inverter software may misdiagnose an error and shut down the EV system
- Owners will be notified starting September 9, 2024
- Dealers will inspect and update inverter software free of charge
The affected vehicles were manufactured between September 8, 2022, and May 8, 2023. The issue lies within the inverter’s Power Electronics Box (PEB), which can misdiagnose a gap in the current ripple frequency of the motor at high speeds. This misdiagnosis prompts the system to cut the motor’s torque as a protective measure. Consequently, this can cause the vehicle to enter a fail-safe mode, resulting in a sudden loss of motive power without prior warning.
Safety Risks
A sudden loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash, especially since the fail-safe mode is only released after the vehicle is completely powered off, allowing for a possible restart. Drivers may notice a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) and a warning message “EV System OFF” on the instrument cluster display.
Remedy and Notification
Nissan will notify dealers of the recall beginning July 30, 2024, with owners of potentially affected vehicles being notified from September 9, 2024. Dealers will inspect the inverter software version and update it if necessary, free of charge. The inspection process should take less than 30 minutes, while the software reprogramming could take up to one and a half hours for all-wheel-drive (AWD) models.
