Rivian Automotive, LLC has issued a safety recall for nearly 28,000 of its 2025 R1S and R1T electric vehicles due to a defect in the front turn signals. The issue could cause the signals to fail, increasing the risk of a crash. The recall, identified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as number 25V387, addresses a noncompliance with federal safety standards.
Key Highlights
- Vehicles Affected: The recall includes 22,807 model year 2025 Rivian R1S SUVs and 5,075 model year 2025 Rivian R1T trucks.
- The Defect: One or both front turn signal lamps may not illuminate and flash properly. This fails to meet the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108.
- Safety Risk: A non-functioning turn signal can reduce the awareness of other drivers about the vehicle’s intent to turn, which may increase the risk of a collision.
- The Remedy: Rivian will inspect the front turn signals on affected vehicles and replace them if necessary, free of charge.
- Owner Notification: Rivian expects to mail notification letters to affected owners on or before July 25, 2025.
Details of the Defect
The problem stems from incorrectly manufactured parts from a supplier, Myotek. According to the recall report, manufacturing issues may cause an internal failure in some turn signal lamps during use. This prevents the signals from illuminating and flashing, which is a violation of FMVSS 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”
The recall covers R1S vehicles produced between April 29, 2024, and May 13, 2025, and R1T vehicles manufactured from July 10, 2024, to May 13, 2025. The suspect period began on April 29, 2024, when Rivian started building with the potentially faulty components, and ended on May 13, 2025, when the company ceased using the parts.
Safety Risk and Driver Warnings
The primary safety concern is the diminished performance of the front turn signal lamp, which could lead to “reduced awareness of the vehicle’s intent to turn for road users in front of the vehicle.” This confusion could elevate the risk of a crash. As of the filing date, Rivian is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or fatalities related to this condition.
Drivers will receive clear warnings if a turn signal fails. A message stating, “Turn signal lights not working. Service it soon,” will appear on the driver’s display. Additionally, the driver will notice double-speed blinking and hear double-speed sounds from the remaining operational turn signals, alerting them to the malfunction.
Remedy and Recall Information
To resolve the issue, Rivian will have its service centers inspect and, if required, replace the front turn signal lamps on all potentially affected vehicles. The replacement components will be new parts that meet the correct production specifications.
Owners of the affected vehicles do not need to take immediate action and can expect to receive an official notification letter by mail on or before July 25, 2025. For more information, owners can contact Rivian customer service at 1-888-748-4261 and reference the manufacturer recall number, FSAM-1693. The recall is also searchable on the NHTSA website under campaign number 25V387.
