Rivian Software Update Adds Performance and Utility

Rivian's 2026.03 software update expands Sport Mode and Launch Mode to more R1 variants, adds an Apple Watch app, and introduces a cold weather battery indicator.

Rivian has released its 2026.03 over-the-air software update. It delivers expanded performance modes, a new Apple Watch companion app, enhanced driver assistance flexibility, and improved cold-weather transparency across the R1 lineup.

Highlights

  • Launch Mode now available on Gen 1 Quad-Motor and both generations of Dual-Motor Performance vehicles, expanding access to the acceleration feature.
  • Sport Mode extended to base Dual-Motor lineups across Gen 1 NMC and Gen 2 LFP battery configurations, with tailored calibration for each chemistry.
  • Apple Watch companion app gives owners vehicle control from the wrist, reducing reliance on an iPhone.
  • Cold weather battery indicator shows how much energy is used for pack warming, improving range transparency in winter conditions.

Sport Mode Expands Across Dual-Motor Lineup

The update broadens Sport Mode access to Rivian’s base Dual-Motor configurations. For Gen 1 owners with NMC batteries, this means optimized power delivery and faster acceleration. Gen 2 owners with the LFP-based Dual Standard setup gain the same performance calibration.

Additionally, all compatible Gen 1 and Gen 2 vehicles can now select “Standard” ride height while Sport Mode is active. Rivian made this change in response to driver feedback. Many owners preferred the responsiveness of Sport Mode but wanted a higher ride position.

Launch Mode Reaches More R1 Variants

Gen 1 Quad-Motor and both generations of Dual-Motor Performance vehicles now have access to Launch Mode. Drivers activate the feature by selecting Sport Mode, pressing the flag icon, and holding the brake and accelerator at the same time.

Rivian notes that Launch Mode is designed for closed-circuit track use in dry conditions. The company advises drivers to use the feature on clear, flat surfaces only.

Apple Watch App Debuts for All Vehicles

A dedicated Apple Watch companion app is now available for all Rivian vehicles. The app provides access to essential vehicle controls directly from the wrist. As a result, owners can leave their iPhone behind during outdoor activities.

Driver Assistance Gets More Flexibility

Rivian has added the ability to adjust Drive Modes and vehicle settings while certain driver assistance features are engaged. Specifically, owners with Gen 1 Driver+ or Gen 2 Autonomy+ can now switch between modes such as All-Purpose and Conserve. They can also change Ride Height and Ride Comfort settings.

Importantly, Highway Assist and Universal Hands-Free remain active during these adjustments. This gives drivers more control over comfort and efficiency without disengaging assistance features.

Kneel Mode Gains New Options

Rivian has expanded Kneel Mode with a new “Lower” setting. This option lowers the vehicle roughly one additional inch beyond the existing “Low” position. However, exact measurements vary by variant and tire configuration.

The update also removes previous limitations on when Kneel Mode can activate. Owners can now engage it from all on-road Drive Modes, directly from “High” ride height, and on uneven surfaces. Rivian noted that customers across its ownership base find the feature useful for easier entry and exit.

Cold Weather Range Indicator Added

The 2026.03 update introduces a cold weather indicator on the battery icon. A blue shading graphic appears on both the Driver Display and the mobile app. It shows how much energy the system is using to warm the battery pack to its optimal operating temperature.

This feature gives owners clearer insight into temporary range reductions during winter driving. For more detail, Rivian has published a dedicated guide to winter performance.
