Sepion Technologies, a pioneer in the development of advanced battery materials, has introduced a non-flammable liquid electrolyte designed to enhance the safety of electric vehicle (EV) batteries. Utilizing a unique AI-driven materials discovery platform, the company has successfully developed an electrolyte that significantly reduces the risk of fires, marking a significant step forward in battery technology for EVs.

Key Highlights:

  • Non-Flammable Electrolyte Enhances Safety: Sepion’s newly developed electrolyte demonstrated superior safety features, including a high flash point and a self-extinguishing time far exceeding that of standard electrolytes.
  • AI Accelerates R&D: Leveraging artificial intelligence, Sepion can evaluate millions of formulations quickly, improving the efficiency and effectiveness of their research.
  • UN/DOT Certification Achieved: The company recently obtained UN/DOT38.3 certification for its lithium-metal pouch cells, underscoring its commitment to safety.

Sepion’s innovative approach involves an intensive process where AI tools, including molecular dynamics simulations and property prediction models, are employed to sift through vast libraries of materials. This process not only speeds up the research but also ensures that only the most promising materials are synthesized and tested further.

Dr. Brian Sisk, Sepion’s CTO, emphasized the importance of this approach: “Our AI-based materials discovery method enhances our R&D capabilities, enabling us to deliver solutions that meet critical safety standards more efficiently.”

The introduction of this non-flammable electrolyte is not just a step forward in safety but also in performance. It supports 3C fast charging and is compatible with lithium-metal anodes, potentially increasing the range of EVs by up to 40 percent with rapid charging capabilities. Sepion Technologies’ VP of Business Development, Salil Soman, shared, “Safety is at the forefront when customers seek new, better-performing battery technologies for e-mobility applications. Making a non-flammable electrolyte capable of sustaining 3C fast charging with a lithium-metal anode is a significant milestone for Sepion and the industry.”

As part of its ongoing commitment to innovation and safety, Sepion is actively working with commercial partners and exploring new collaborations with global auto manufacturers and energy storage stakeholders. These efforts aim to advance the adoption of safer, more efficient battery technologies across the industry.

About Sepion Technologies: Located in Alameda, Calif., Sepion Technologies specializes in soft separator coatings and liquid electrolytes. Their groundbreaking products are designed to seamlessly integrate into existing lithium-ion battery production lines, providing significant performance enhancements without substantial additional costs.
