Electric pickup maker Slate Auto will invest $10.4 million to expand its North American headquarters in Troy, Michigan, creating at least 392 qualified new jobs over the next five years. The Michigan Strategic Fund Board approved a $5 million Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant to support the expansion, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation announced. Slate has been headquartered in Troy since it began operations in 2022 and currently employs 325 people across Michigan, including a facility in Sterling Heights.

Highlights

  • Capital investment of $10.4 million tied to expansion of Slate’s North American headquarters in Troy, Oakland County
  • At least 392 qualified new jobs in corporate, engineering, and design roles over five years
  • $5 million MBDP performance-based grant approved by the Michigan Strategic Fund Board
  • Slate has accumulated more than 150,000 reservations for its affordable electric pickup truck, with deliveries targeted for late 2026

Why Michigan

Slate evaluated several states before selecting Michigan, citing the state’s automotive industry leadership and the proximity to other Metro Detroit firms working in mobility and vehicle electrification. The MEDC noted that the state’s manufacturing legacy, infrastructure, and skilled workforce factored into the company’s decision.

The expansion is positioned as part of Slate’s effort to strengthen domestic innovation and manufacturing capability, with a focus on sustainable product research and development.

Path to Production

The Troy buildout will add corporate, engineering, and design positions over the next five years. Slate says the additional headcount will help meet demand for its principal product — an affordable electric pickup truck — with initial deliveries anticipated in late 2026 and higher-volume production to follow in 2027.
