SolarEdge Reveals Advanced Bi-Directional DC EV Charger at Intersolar 2023

SolarEdge announces a new Bi-Directional DC EV Charger at Intersolar 2023. The charger, designed for efficient, high-powered charging, also promotes home energy storage via electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

What’s Happening

At Intersolar Europe 2023, global smart energy leader, SolarEdge Technologies, Inc. introduced its game-changing Bi-Directional DC EV Charger. This innovative device enables solar-powered Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) functionalities. It’s expected to hit the market in the second half of 2024.

Why It Matters

The introduction of the new Charger is pivotal because it’s based on SolarEdge’s state-of-the-art DC-coupled architecture, bringing unprecedented benefits to EV owners. It facilitates charging directly from photovoltaic (PV) power sources without unnecessary AC-to-DC conversions, providing efficient and high-powered charging.

Key Points

The SolarEdge Bi-Directional DC EV Charger enables fast charging of up to 24kW. This rapid charging is made possible by drawing electricity from the PV array, home battery, and the grid simultaneously. This method bypasses the home’s AC infrastructure and the limitations of the car’s onboard EV charger, making the process incredibly efficient.

Moreover, this charger uses excess PV through SolarEdge’s inverters’ DC to AC oversizing. Furthermore, SolarEdge’s ONE energy optimization system calculates dynamic utility prices and autonomously manages EV battery charge and discharge. This feature can lead to homeowners earning payments from electricity suppliers during demand response events by feeding stored EV battery power back to the grid (V2G).

Additionally, the EV battery can serve as a large home battery storage solution of up to 50kWh, both on and off grid, providing homeowners the opportunity to back up their homes during extended outages (V2H). The Charger is compatible with both 400V and 800V EV powertrains through a standard CSS connector.

Bottom Line

SolarEdge’s Bi-Directional DC EV Charger presents a revolutionary approach to EV charging and home energy storage. The unveiling at Intersolar 2023 marked the dawn of a new era in smart energy management, setting the stage for a greener and more sustainable future. The SolarEdge booth at Intersolar Hall B4, Stand 110, is the hub for this cutting-edge technology.
