Subaru Launches E-Outback BEV Production at Yajima

Subaru begins battery electric vehicle production at its upgraded Gunma Yajima Plant, with the jointly developed E-Outback as the first BEV built on its new mixed-model line.

Subaru Corporation has started in-house production of battery electric vehicles at its Gunma Yajima Plant in Japan. The all-new E-Outback is the first BEV to roll off the upgraded line, marking a key step in the automaker’s electrification strategy. Production follows facility upgrades that began in August 2025 and introduced a mixed-model line capable of building BEVs alongside internal combustion and hybrid vehicles.

Highlights

  • Subaru begins BEV manufacturing at its Gunma Yajima Plant with the all-new E-Outback as the first model produced.
  • Mixed-model production line enables BEV, petrol, and hybrid vehicle assembly on a single line.
  • Toyota collaboration deepens as the E-Outback becomes the second jointly developed BEV in Subaru’s global lineup.
  • UK market arrival is planned for summer 2026, with additional details expected closer to launch.

Mixed-Model Production Line

The Gunma Yajima Plant upgrades centered on establishing a mixed-model production capability. The new line allows Subaru to manufacture BEVs such as the E-Outback on the same line as petrol and hybrid models. This approach builds on the company’s long-standing mixed-production expertise and positions the facility for flexible, high-efficiency output as electrification demand evolves.

Subaru stated it will continue pursuing greater flexibility in manufacturing techniques to improve production efficiency, enhance responsiveness to shifting market demand, and strengthen overall competitiveness.

Toyota Partnership Enters Third Decade

The E-Outback is the second model in Subaru’s global BEV lineup and was jointly developed with Toyota Motor Corporation. The alliance between the two automakers began in 2005 and reached its 20th anniversary in 2025. Collaboration has expanded over the years to encompass development, production, and supply chain operations.

The latest manufacturing advancements at the Yajima Plant were achieved through deeper cooperation between Subaru and Toyota in electrification, combined with progress in Subaru’s monozukuri (manufacturing) capabilities.

Subaru’s Growing BEV Lineup

The E-Outback joins the Solterra and the upcoming Uncharted in Subaru’s expanding battery electric portfolio. The E-Outback is scheduled to arrive in the UK market in summer 2026, with further specifications and pricing to be announced closer to launch.
