Tesla, Inc. has announced a recall of certain 2024 Cybertruck vehicles due to a fault in the drive inverter. This defect can lead to a loss of drive power, which may increase the risk of a crash. The recall impacts 2,431 vehicles and aims to address issues related to the metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFET) in the drive inverter. Affected owners will be notified by Tesla and offered a free replacement of the drive inverter.
Key Highlights:
- Affected Models: 2024 Tesla Cybertruck vehicles manufactured between November 6, 2023, and July 30, 2024.
- Issue Identified: Drive inverter defect may cause a sudden loss of torque, leading to a potential loss of propulsion.
- Notification Timeline: Tesla plans to send notification letters to affected owners on January 4, 2025.
- Remedy Provided: Tesla will replace the faulty drive inverter at no cost to owners.
- Owner Assistance: Tesla customer service can be reached at 1-877-798-3752 for additional support.
The recall, labeled NHTSA Campaign Number 24V832000, stems from a fault in the drive inverter that can cause a sudden stop in power delivery to the wheels. This condition can prevent the driver from using the accelerator pedal to apply torque, potentially leading to a higher risk of a collision. There are currently no known reports of collisions, injuries, or fatalities related to this issue. However, drivers will receive a visual alert on the vehicle’s user interface instructing them to safely pull over should a loss of propulsion occur.
Remedy Details
Tesla service centers will replace the defective drive inverter free of charge. The replacement component will include a properly functioning MOSFET component, unlike the recalled unit. Tesla began implementing this remedy on production vehicles as of July 30, 2024.
The recall decision was made following a detailed investigation initiated on August 5, 2024, after a customer reported a sudden loss of propulsion in a 2024 Cybertruck. Tesla analyzed data from similar vehicles to identify the root cause, ultimately determining that specific MOSFET components in the drive inverter were prone to failure.
Tesla’s customer notification letters are scheduled to be mailed out on January 4, 2025. Meanwhile, Tesla stores and service centers have already been informed about this recall since November 7, 2024. Owners with questions can also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at 1-888-327-4236 or visit nhtsa.gov for more information on this recall.
The recall impacts a specific population of 2024 Cybertruck models that are equipped with drive inverters containing MOSFET part number 1530063-2A-B. Tesla identified an increased rate of failure with these components and decided to voluntarily recall the affected units to mitigate any safety risks.
Affected owners are encouraged to schedule a service appointment to replace the drive inverter as soon as they receive notification. The service is free of charge, and Tesla remains committed to resolving the issue promptly and ensuring customer safety.
