TomTom and CARIAD, Volkswagen Group’s software subsidiary, have announced the debut of their co-developed next-generation navigation solution. The innovative system will be introduced starting with premium electric vehicles (EVs) from Audi and will gradually be implemented across Volkswagen Group’s broader lineup. This solution integrates seamlessly into vehicle infotainment and advanced driver assistance systems.
Key Highlights:
- Integrated EV routing and range service to enhance electric mobility experience.
- Utilizes TomTom’s cloud-native navigation software for real-time, lane-specific traffic data.
- Switches to onboard software when a data connection is unavailable, ensuring uninterrupted navigation.
- Traffic, EV charger availability, and driving style are factored in for optimized charging stops.
- Developed for seamless integration with digital cockpit and driver assistance systems.
The navigation system provides lane-level routing, real-time traffic information, and accurate estimated times of arrival. Even if there is no data connection available, the software transitions to its onboard version, maintaining a consistent experience for users. The solution’s design focuses on ensuring that drivers have reliable and optimized guidance throughout their journeys.
Additionally, the EV routing and range service aims to make electric vehicle driving smoother, particularly on long trips. The system considers traffic conditions, availability of EV charging stations, and even driver behavior to recommend the best charging stops, integrating them into overall travel plans. It also continually monitors the vehicle’s range, adjusting routes as needed for efficient energy use.
“By combining CARIAD’s software and integration competence with TomTom’s expertise in location technology, we are bringing a next-generation navigation system to vehicles of the Volkswagen Group,” said Thomas Günther, Chief Launch Officer, CARIAD. “Together, we have developed an innovative solution that integrates seamlessly with the digital cockpit and offers the driver a reliable, fast, and intuitive in-vehicle experience.”
“We’re proud to celebrate another milestone with Volkswagen Group, one of the world’s leading automobile manufacturers,” said Benoit Joly, Senior Vice President for Automotive Sales, TomTom. “Today, TomTom’s technologies are already integrated in millions of Volkswagen Group vehicles, and we look forward to continuing to innovate together to enhance the driver experience.”
The collaboration between TomTom and CARIAD demonstrates a commitment to enhancing the digital and electric mobility experience, as Volkswagen Group works to roll out these innovations across their vehicle portfolio.
