Toyota Unveils Next-Gen Fuel Cell System

Toyota Motor Corporation has introduced its third-generation fuel cell (FC) system, marking a major step in its vision for a hydrogen-powered society. The 3rd Gen FC System delivers enhanced durability, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness, making it an ideal solution for heavy-duty commercial vehicles. Toyota plans to roll out the system in Japan, Europe, North America, and China starting after 2026.

Key Highlights:

  • Double the durability compared to the previous generation, achieving longevity on par with diesel engines.
  • 20% increase in fuel efficiency, allowing for greater driving range.
  • Significant cost reduction through innovative cell design and streamlined manufacturing.
  • Versatile applications, including commercial trucks, passenger cars, stationary generators, rail, and maritime transport.

Toyota will debut the 3rd Gen FC System at the H2 & FC EXPO in Tokyo on February 19.

Toyota Unveils Next-Gen Fuel Cell System

Expanding Hydrogen Adoption in Transportation

Toyota has been a leader in fuel cell technology since launching the MIRAI FCEV in 2014, selling 28,000 units worldwide. Since 2019, the company has also supplied 2,700 FC systems for applications in buses, railways, and power generation across more than 100 global customers.

The development of the 3rd Gen FC System is based on extensive customer feedback and insights from real-world tests in Japan’s Tokyo and Fukushima prefectures. By refining its fuel cell technology, Toyota aims to accelerate hydrogen adoption in commercial transportation.

With a compact design for easier vehicle integration and increased power output, the system is positioned to play a key role in the transition to zero-emission mobility. Toyota remains committed to working with governments, companies, and organizations to bring a hydrogen society closer to reality.
