Volkswagen Group debuted several electric vehicles and a dedicated architecture during its Group Night event in Beijing. The presentation focused on the “In China, for China” strategy, highlighting localized technology and design tailored for the Chinese market.
Highlights
- Introduction of the China Main Platform (CMP), a dedicated architecture for entry-level electric mobility.
- Debut of the ID. CODE concept, an SUV featuring Level 4 autonomous driving capabilities and AI-powered interaction.
- Establishment of a Volkswagen Group China Technology Company (VCTC) to reduce development times by 30%.
- Expansion of the ID. family with the ID.UNYX, a specialized sub-brand launching in 2024.
Accelerating Regional Electrification
The Volkswagen Group is shifting its development focus to meet the rapid pace of the Chinese electric vehicle market. By localizing R&D through the VCTC in Hefei, the company aims to integrate local supplier technologies and accelerate time-to-market.
This strategy reflects a broader industry trend where global OEMs must compete with highly agile local manufacturers on software and digital ecosystems. Consequently, the company is prioritizing AI-driven user experiences and China-specific hardware configurations.

Architecture and Platform Strategy
Volkswagen is diversifying its technical foundations to cover multiple market segments within the region. The group highlighted two primary paths for its electric vehicle architecture:
- China Main Platform (CMP): Developed in collaboration with XPENG, this platform targets the entry-level compact segment. It aims for a 40% cost reduction by 2026 through localized components.
- Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB): The existing global platform continues to evolve, supporting new performance upgrades and high-voltage systems.
The ID. CODE Concept and Future Design
The ID. CODE concept serves as a technical showcase for the brand’s next-generation design language. According to the company, the vehicle is designed for Level 4 autonomous driving, allowing the driver to engage in other tasks while the system manages navigation.
The concept features Smart Windows with integrated AI-assisted avatars that appear as the driver approaches. Additionally, the exterior utilizes an AI-controlled light system that communicates with the vehicle’s surroundings.
Portfolio Expansion
The Volkswagen brand will expand its ID. lineup to 16 models by 2030. This includes the new ID.UNYX, which is scheduled for a market launch later this year. The company stated this sub-brand will focus on a “lifestyle-oriented” aesthetic to attract younger demographics in urban Chinese centers.
