Volvo Offers Free Home Charging for EV Buyers

Volvo Cars and Vattenfall are driving Sweden toward a sustainable future with one year of free home charging for new electric vehicles—paving the way for a global, fossil-free mobility revolution.

Volvo Cars is launching a free home charging initiative in partnership with Vattenfall, offering Swedish customers one year of complimentary fossil-free electricity for their new fully electric vehicles. The program begins in February 2026 and marks a significant step in making electric mobility more accessible and appealing.

Key Highlights

  • One year of free, fossil-free home charging for Swedish EV buyers starting February 2026
  • Up to 25,000 km of free electric driving per year through a Vattenfall electricity contract
  • Smart charging integration via the Volvo Cars app to optimize cost and emissions
  • Initiative to expand globally after Swedish launch
  • Future inclusion of V2X technology for bi-directional charging in models like the EX90

Through this collaboration, Volvo customers can benefit from free charging at home for up to 5,150 kWh per year, equivalent to 25,000 km of driving based on the EX90 WLTP cycle. The energy consumption will be tracked via the Volvo Cars app, which monitors charging status, calculates costs, and automatically deducts electricity expenses from monthly Vattenfall bills.

Alejandro Castro Pérez, Vice President of Energy Solutions at Volvo Cars, emphasized the company’s focus on customer needs and sustainability:

“We are listening to our customers, and by providing free charging offers we hope to create value for them and accelerate our collective journey to a smarter, greener society.”

Scaling Beyond Sweden

The Swedish launch serves as a pilot for a broader global rollout, with Volvo planning to partner with additional sustainable energy providers across Europe and other regions. As vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology becomes available in 2026, the initiative will evolve to include bi-directional charging, enabling customers to power their homes or sell energy back to the grid.

Volvo and Vattenfall share a longstanding commitment to sustainable mobility, having previously collaborated on the world’s first diesel plug-in hybrid (Volvo V60) and the fossil-free energy supply for Volvo’s Torslanda plant.

Branislav Slavic, Head of Customers & Solutions at Vattenfall Nordics, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative:

“Volvo Cars adding an offer of free home charging from Vattenfall, when purchasing a new electric car, is a positive, sustainable step. Working together to encourage the use of electric cars with fossil free electricity, starting in Sweden, is incredibly inspiring.”

Toward a Greener Future

The partnership reflects both companies’ shared mission to accelerate electrification, reduce emissions, and lower barriers for EV adoption. Volvo’s lineup already includes five fully electric models, with the new EX60 set for launch in early 2026.
