WEX Fleet Card Now Supports EV Charging Payments

WEX launches first fleet card combining fuel and EV charging payments into one account, offering 175,000+ charging ports and 90% U.S. gas station coverage for mixed-energy fleets.

WEX has launched an upgraded fleet card that enables payment for both traditional fuel and public electric vehicle charging through a single account. The company claims to be the first fuel card provider to unify fueling and EV charging payments across a proprietary closed-loop network, with access to over 175,000 public charging ports and more than 90% of U.S. gas stations.

Highlights

  • Unified payment system consolidates fuel and EV charging transactions into one card, one account, and one invoice for mixed-energy fleets
  • Embedded RFID technology eliminates the need for separate EV charging cards or mobile apps to initiate charging sessions
  • Closed-loop network architecture provides end-to-end transaction control with enhanced data capture and fleet-specific purchase controls
  • Immediate availability for eligible fleet customers through the WEX online portal or during scheduled card renewals

Addressing Fleet Payment Fragmentation

Fleets operating mixed vehicle portfolios—including internal combustion engine vehicles, hybrids, and EVs—often contend with fragmented payment systems, multiple cards or apps, and complex reconciliation processes. The updated WEX Fleet card consolidates these functions into a single payment credential.

“Our customers want one solution that works everywhere, and that’s exactly what we’re delivering with EV payments built directly into this new WEX Fleet card,” said Carlos Carriedo, Chief Operating Officer, Americas Payments & Mobility at WEX. “It’s simplicity at scale for mixed-energy operations.”

Technical Capabilities

The card operates on WEX’s proprietary closed-loop fleet network rather than open-loop, general-purpose card networks. This architecture enables:

  • Richer transaction data for fleet management analysis
  • Stronger security controls compared to general-purpose payment networks
  • Fleet-specific purchase controls via the DriverDash™ app
  • Unified reporting across all fueling and charging activity
  • Single credit line for all transactions

Integration With Existing EV Infrastructure

The payment capabilities integrate with WEX’s En Route EV suite, which includes real-time charger availability, remote session initiation, and detailed transaction insights. Fleet managers retain consolidated visibility into all fueling and charging activity through existing reporting tools.

Availability and Activation

The WEX Fleet card with EV payment capabilities is available now for eligible fleet customers. Existing customers can enable EV functionality through the WEX online customer portal by selecting “Enable EV” on existing fuel cards or when ordering new cards. Updated cards can also be received automatically during regular renewal cycles.
