Adden Energy has officially commissioned a state-of-the-art pilot production line to manufacture its dynamic-stability lithium metal solid-state batteries, aiming to revolutionize the battery industry. Leveraging a Harvard-discovered scientific phenomenon called dynamic stability, these batteries combine the advantages of lithium metal and all-solid-state technologies, delivering superior energy density, charge rates, and safety compared to current market offerings.

Massachusetts Secretary of Economic Development Yvonne Hao attended the facility’s commissioning event, highlighting the state’s commitment to supporting groundbreaking technologies and domestic manufacturing. Hao toured the facility and observed the battery production process firsthand, marking a significant milestone for Adden Energy and the local innovation ecosystem.

Key Highlights:

  • Dynamic-stability batteries outperform current lithium-ion options in energy density, charge time, and safety.
  • Initial prototypes demonstrated a 50% improvement in energy density and under 10-minute charge times while remaining non-flammable.
  • New pilot line utilizes standard lithium-ion manufacturing equipment with minor modifications, enabling cost-effective scaling.
  • Purchase orders from automakers and industrial users have already begun, with cells produced on the new line.
  • The production line will reach full capacity by summer, meeting growing global demand for next-gen batteries.

Dr. Pu Zhang, Chief Product Officer at Adden Energy, emphasized the scalability potential: “We can manufacture these batteries on the same equipment that is commonly used for lithium-ion production, which gives us a clear route to scale-up and manufacturing.”

Adden Energy’s innovative approach sidesteps the high costs typically associated with lithium metal solid-state batteries, which often require specialized, slow manufacturing equipment. By adapting conventional production lines, the company reduces costs significantly, making the technology viable for mass-market applications, especially electric vehicles (EVs).

MassVentures, a longtime supporter of Adden Energy, provided early funding and continues to play a pivotal role in the company’s growth. “Adden Energy’s story is a perfect example of the entrepreneurial excellence we have in Massachusetts,” said Secretary Hao, praising the company’s journey from Harvard spin-out to a promising battery innovator.

With the pilot line poised for full-scale production by summer, Adden Energy is on track to meet the surging demand from automakers and help advance the global EV market through safer, faster-charging, and more energy-dense batteries.
