The all-new Alfa Romeo Tonale is demonstrating its innovation in fuel efficiency after successfully completing its final Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) testing. Boasting an impressive electric range of 33 miles and a miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) rating of 77, the Tonale is showing a remarkable promise in the world of electric vehicles. When fully charged, the vehicle can cover a staggering 360 miles.
Why It Matters
Larry Dominique, Senior Vice President and Head of Alfa Romeo North America, expressed enthusiasm over the Tonale’s performance. According to him, “The Alfa Romeo Tonale represents the beginning of our transformation to greater electrification.” Dominique adds that the vehicle stays true to the brand’s commitment to providing top-notch performance characteristics, noting the best-in-class 285 horsepower that the Tonale delivers.
The Alfa Romeo Tonale stands out as the most efficient plug-in hybrid Compact Sports Utility Vehicle (C-SUV) in its class. Its advanced powertrain system relies on a 1.3-liter MultiAir turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which provides torque to the front wheels. Complementing this is a high-voltage Belt Starter Generator mounted to the engine, promoting enhanced efficiency, smoother drive cycle transitions, and seamless stop-start capabilities.
Furthermore, a 15.5-kWh lithium-ion battery powers a 90-kW electric motor on the Tonale’s rear axle. The motor can generate 184 lb.-ft. (250 Nm) of torque from 0 rpm, making the overall output of the vehicle reach 285 horsepower and 347 lb.-ft. (470 Nm) of torque.
The Alfa Romeo Tonale is now shipping to dealerships in three variants: the Veloce priced at $47,495, the Ti at $44,995, and the Sprint at $42,995. These prices do not include a $1,595 destination charge.
