General Motors (GM) has announced a recall for the 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV due to a non-compliant pedestrian alert sound system. The system may not produce sufficient sound volume, which could increase the risk of injury to pedestrians. The recall affects 7,606 vehicles manufactured between August 13, 2024, and October 16, 2024.
Key Highlights:
- NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V925000
- Affected Vehicles: 2025 Chevrolet Equinox EV
- Issue: Pedestrian alert sound system volume fails to meet FMVSS 141 requirements.
- Potential Risk: Pedestrians may not detect approaching vehicles, increasing the likelihood of injury.
- Remedy: Dealers will update the body control module (BCM) software free of charge.
- Notification Timeline: Owner notification letters will be mailed January 27, 2025.
GM discovered the issue during an audit on October 8, 2024. The investigation revealed that the BCM software calibrations were improperly implemented for the 2025 model year. Vehicles operating between 12.4 mph (20 km/h) and 18.6 mph (30 km/h) may not produce the required sound volume, failing to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 141.
“Under some conditions, pedestrians may not be able to determine by sound whether an approaching vehicle is speeding up or slowing down, increasing the risk of injury,” GM stated in its recall documentation.
GM implemented software corrections at its assembly plant on October 16, 2024, to address this issue for future production. The remedy includes updating the BCM calibration software for affected vehicles, ensuring compliance with FMVSS 141. Owners with unsold vehicles may receive updates via wireless over-the-air (OTA) technology.
