Altilium, a UK-based clean technology group, and Enva, a leading recycling specialist, have announced a strategic partnership to enhance the collection and recycling of EV batteries across the UK. This partnership aims to bolster the circular economy for battery minerals, leveraging Enva’s extensive collection infrastructure and Altilium’s advanced recycling technology.

Key Highlights:

  • Partnership Formation: Altilium and Enva have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on EV battery recycling.
  • Infrastructure Utilization: Enva will provide nationwide collection services, while Altilium will handle the recycling process using its EcoCathode™ technology.
  • Recycling Efficiency: Altilium’s advanced hydrometallurgical processes can recover over 95% of battery metals for reuse in new batteries.
  • Environmental Impact: The collaboration supports the creation of a circular economy for battery materials, contributing to carbon reduction efforts.
  • Commercial Benefits: The partnership eliminates the need for Altilium to establish its own collection infrastructure, streamlining operations.
  • Teesside Refinery: The recycled materials will feed into Altilium’s Teesside plant, capable of processing waste batteries from 150,000 EVs annually, producing 30,000 MT of Cathode Active Materials (CAM).

Under the MOU, the partnership will focus on key initiatives, including the safe handling and collection of EV batteries across the UK. Altilium’s proprietary EcoCathode™ process allows for the recovery of over 95% of battery metals, which can be reused in the production of new batteries. This collaboration is set to enhance the circular economy for battery materials in the UK, reducing waste and promoting sustainability.

Michael Sneath, Managing Director of Enva’s Lubricants and Batteries Division, emphasized the importance of this partnership: “We are excited to partner with Altilium to develop a comprehensive and sustainable supply chain for EV battery recycling in the UK. Expert handling and storage of this potentially hazardous material is paramount. This collaboration will solve an emerging problem for our customers, enhancing the UK’s recycling capabilities and contributing to the circular economy by transforming used batteries into valuable raw materials for new batteries.”

Rod Savage, Altilium’s Program Director for End-of-Life Batteries, added: “By leveraging Enva’s collection network and our processing expertise, we aim to set a new standard in battery recycling, ensuring maximum recovery of materials and supporting the growth of the EV market in an environmentally responsible way.”

The arrangement offers significant commercial benefits to Altilium by utilizing Enva’s existing infrastructure, eliminating the need for Altilium to establish direct relationships with multiple waste producers and automotive OEMs. Additionally, the partnership will supply feedstock for Altilium’s Teesside refinery, the only planned UK facility refining lithium-ion waste to battery-ready CAM for direct reuse. This plant will process waste batteries from 150,000 EVs annually, producing 30,000 MT of CAM, enough to meet 20% of the expected UK demand by 2030.

Future Outlook:

With over 100 million EV batteries expected to reach the end of their life globally in the next decade, the creation of a domestic recycling ecosystem by Altilium and Enva is a critical step toward sustainable battery disposal. By keeping valuable resources within the UK supply chain, this partnership not only supports environmental goals but also contributes to the reduction of carbon emissions.

Altilium’s unique position as the only UK company recycling and upcycling old EV batteries to produce high nickel CAM underscores its commitment to innovation and sustainability. The company’s EcoCathode™ process, which reduces carbon emissions by 60% and costs by 20% compared to virgin materials, is a significant advancement in making EVs more affordable and environmentally friendly.
