The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has released the May 2025 Gaps Progress Report, a vital document that tracks efforts to address standardization gaps for electric vehicles (EVs). Produced by the ANSI Electric Vehicles Standards Panel (EVSP), the report supports the safe and widespread adoption of EVs and their infrastructure across the United States. Standardization ensures EVs and charging systems are safe, reliable, and compatible, boosting consumer confidence and aiding the shift to sustainable transportation.
Key Highlights:
- The report updates standards, research, and conformity assessment activities for EVs.
- It suggests modifications to existing gaps and identifies new ones for future focus.
- The June 2023 roadmap pinpointed 37 standardization gaps: 14 high priority, 20 medium, and 3 low priority.
- 23 gaps need further pre-standardization research and development.
- The report is a “living document”, updated periodically as progress continues.
The Gaps Progress Report details advancements by standards developing organizations (SDOs) and stakeholders in tackling gaps from the Roadmap of Standards and Codes for Electric Vehicles at Scale. This roadmap, a joint effort by 130 public- and private-sector organizations, includes federal agencies, SDOs, industry, and academia. The report highlights progress, proposes gap adjustments, and flags new areas for attention. It remains a dynamic tool, updated regularly until the EVSP issues a new roadmap.
The ANSI EVSP does not create standards but coordinates stakeholders to enable safe, large-scale EV deployment in the U.S., with an eye on global alignment. The next report is due this fall.
