Aptera Motors Corp. recently achieved a groundbreaking milestone by completing its first-ever solar-supported road trip, showcasing the potential of solar electric vehicles (sEVs) to travel long distances without traditional charging stations. Co-CEO Steve Fambro drove the production-intent vehicle over 300 miles on a single charge, navigating diverse terrains like snow-covered mountains, historic Route 66, and desert landscapes. Powered in part by solar energy, the journey highlighted Aptera’s efficiency and reliability under real-world conditions. This trip marks a significant step toward validating the vehicle’s readiness for long-distance travel, with final efficiency tests slated for the coming months.

- Exceptional Efficiency: Achieved 122 Wh/mile, making it twice as efficient as the most efficient production EV available today.
- Solar Power Contribution: Harvested 2.4 kWh of solar energy, equivalent to 20 miles of driving powered solely by the sun, even under partly cloudy skies.
- Mobile Charging Innovation: Demonstrated the ability to generate meaningful power while in motion, a first for a production-intent passenger vehicle.
- Real-World Durability: Performed reliably despite a heavier-than-production test vehicle, with better efficiency expected in the final model.
The trip wasn’t a formal range test, but the results impressed nonetheless. Aptera cruised past challenges like mountain passes and desert winds with ease, proving its systems can handle varied conditions. The company plans to conduct a conclusive efficiency and range validation soon using “Gemini,” a production-weight vehicle, on a closed course with third-party verification.
Aptera’s flagship Launch Edition offers up to 400 miles per charge and can gain 40 miles daily from its integrated solar panels.
