Allotrope Energy has introduced a pioneering battery technology called Lignavolt, poised to transform energy storage, particularly for electric vehicles. Derived from lignin—a sustainable byproduct of the paper industry—this innovative technology delivers ultra-fast charging, improved safety, and environmental advantages, addressing key challenges in the shift toward electrification.

Key Highlights

  • Ultra-fast charging: Fully recharges in just 60 seconds
  • Sustainable sourcing: Utilizes lignin from paper production
  • Enhanced safety: Operates without complex cooling systems
  • Extended lifespan: Provides over 10 times the cycles of traditional batteries
  • Cost-efficient: Reduces system costs with a simpler design

Lignavolt is a nano-porous carbon material crafted from lignin, an organic polymer found in wood and plant cells. Suzano S.A., a leading pulp and paper company and Allotrope Energy’s primary investor, supplies this renewable resource as a co-product of its manufacturing process. By integrating Lignavolt into battery anodes and cathodes, Allotrope Energy has developed lithium-carbon batteries and super-capacitors that outperform conventional technologies.

One standout feature is its 60-second recharge capability, which does not compromise battery longevity. This is made possible by Lignavolt’s ability to handle high power rates without overheating, eliminating the need for bulky cooling systems. This reduction in complexity enhances safety while lowering costs and weight—crucial benefits for automotive applications.

Sustainability is at the core of this breakthrough. By leveraging lignin, Allotrope Energy taps into an abundant, renewable resource, reducing reliance on scarce materials like cobalt and nickel. The technology also boasts a cycle life exceeding 10 times that of standard lithium-ion batteries, amplifying its eco-friendly impact.

Dr. Peter Wilson, Allotrope Energy’s CTO, stated, “By utilizing lignin, a renewable and widely abundant resource, we are pushing the boundaries of battery performance while contributing to sustainable energy solutions. The removal of complex cooling systems allows us to deliver next-generation performance at a lower cost.”

In March 2025, third-party verification confirmed Lignavolt’s exceptional performance. The technology blends a high-rate battery anode with a high-capacity electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC) cathode, merging the strengths of super-capacitors and lithium-ion batteries into a single, high-energy-density cell.

Current lithium-ion batteries face supply chain hurdles and safety risks tied to heat management, slowing the transition to zero-emission transport. Lignavolt counters these issues by operating at 10 to 100 times the rate of traditional materials, enabling rapid charging without elaborate cooling. Its use of natural, sustainable components further eases supply chain concerns and minimizes environmental harm.

Founded in 2016, Allotrope Energy focuses on advanced battery carbons. In 2022, Suzano Papel e Cellulose bolstered the company’s efforts through investment, leveraging its vast production capabilities. Suzano Ventures, the venture capital arm of Suzano, champions innovative bio-economy solutions.
