Italy welcomes its first electric bus depot, a significant stride toward sustainable urban mobility, located in Via Ferrarese, Bologna. Operational since March 25, 2024, this pioneering facility, equipped with advanced Kempower charging solutions, marks a pivotal advancement in public transportation. Managed by T-PER (Transporto Passeggeri Emilia-Romagna), the depot is a crucial component of Bologna’s mission to achieve net-zero public transport by 2030, aligning with Horizon Europe’s climate neutrality goals.

Key Highlights:

  • First electric bus depot in Italy featuring Kempower technology
  • 20 simultaneous charging points for efficient operations
  • Supports Bologna’s net-0 public transport goal by 2030
  • Kempower and T-PER partnership enhances sustainable mobility in Europe
  • Modular charging solutions offer scalability and reliability

Sustainable Public Transport Takes a Leap in Bologna

The establishment of this electric bus depot signifies a major step for Bologna, aligning with the city’s commitment to environmental sustainability and cleaner urban living. By 2030, Bologna aims to transition fully to net-zero public transport, a goal significantly supported by this new facility’s capacity to charge 20 electric buses at once.

Kempower’s involvement through its DC charging solutions reinforces its footprint in Italy, showcasing the scalability and reliability of its technology in supporting large-scale public transport systems. The modular design of Kempower’s charging units ensures uninterrupted service, critical for the continuous operation of T-PER’s fleet.

A Commitment to Cleaner, Greener Urban Transport

Mr. Monzali, T-PER’s Technical Director for Infrastructure, emphasizes the importance of reliable charging infrastructure, stating, “I was therefore looking for an utterly reliable charging solution for our e-fleet, to prevent any of our e-buses to stop at any time due to lack of power.” The depot’s design addresses this need by allowing for dynamic power management and remote servicing, ensuring efficiency and reliability in operations.

Tommi Liuska, Chief Sales Officer at Kempower, highlights the project’s role in Bologna’s climate strategy, “We’re grateful for the opportunity to contribute to TPER’s initiative to electrify the public transportation in the region.”
