BYD Dolphin G Debuts DM 5.0 Super Hybrid

BYD has brought its fifth-generation DM 5.0 Super Hybrid to Europe in the Dolphin G DM-i, a B-segment plug-in hybrid the company reports delivers up to 646 miles combined.

BYD has introduced the fifth generation of its Super Hybrid system, DM 5.0, to Europe in the DOLPHIN G DM-i, a B-segment plug-in hybrid that the company reports delivers up to 646 miles of combined range and weighted fuel consumption of 201.7 mpg on a full battery. The DOLPHIN G DM-i is the first BYD model designed and developed specifically for Europe, and the company calls it the only plug-in hybrid in the region’s supermini class. According to BYD, DM 5.0 concentrates its gains in three areas — powertrain, thermal management, and electric integration. The range and consumption figures follow the European WLTP/WLTC test cycles rather than the U.S. EPA standard, and the quoted economy is measured in UK imperial gallons, roughly 168 mpg in U.S. terms.

Highlights

  • DM 5.0 Super Hybrid makes its European debut in the DOLPHIN G DM-i, the first BYD model developed specifically for the region and the only plug-in hybrid in the B-segment supermini class.
  • BYD reports up to 65 miles of pure-electric range and up to 646 miles combined on a full charge and full tank, with weighted fuel consumption of 201.7 mpg (UK imperial; about 168 mpg U.S.) on a full battery.
  • A revised 1.5-liter gasoline engine runs a 16:1 compression ratio and produces 94 hp (95 PS / 70 kW); maximum system power reaches 209 hp (212 PS), with 0–62 mph in 8.3 seconds.
  • Two Blade Battery sizes are offered — 7.42 kWh and 18.3 kWh — and the larger pack supports 39 kW DC charging from 10% to 80% in 26 minutes.

What Changes in DM 5.0

BYD ties the system’s efficiency gains to a reworked powertrain. The 1.5-liter gasoline engine is a new version developed specifically for Super Hybrid use, with a higher compression ratio than before, at 16:1, alongside intelligent fuel injection, combustion, split cooling, and variable lubrication. In the DOLPHIN G DM-i, the engine produces 94 hp (95 PS / 70 kW). The company also reports gains to the electric hybrid system (EHS) through revised cooling and transmission design and the use of ultra-thin silicon steel sheets.

How DM 5.0 Manages Heat

Thermal management is the second area of change. BYD describes a coordinated approach across the front compartment, the cabin, and the battery, built on a full-temperature-range thermal-management architecture that includes direct cooling for the Blade Battery and intelligent control of the cabin environment. The company reports that these measures yield fuel and energy savings in both hotter and cooler conditions.

Electronics and Electric Integration

The third area covers the vehicle’s electronics. DM 5.0 adds a three-controller integration for the powertrain domain that BYD reports increases computing performance and speeds signal transmission. Paired with the company’s 7-in-1 electronic control technology, the system is designed to adapt to varying road conditions, temperatures, and operating scenarios.

BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li said: “We never stop innovating at BYD, and the debut of DM 5.0 shows how this commitment extends to even our more compact models. The benefits of these cutting-edge technologies really help DOLPHIN G to stand out with outstanding fuel efficiency in real-world use, as well as EV range for everyday driving and the long-distance flexibility that comes with 646 miles on a full tank and a full charge. This combination – DOLPHIN G and DM 5.0 – is born to disrupt, and we strongly believe it will shake up this important segment in Europe.”

Range, Batteries, and Charging

The DOLPHIN G DM-i is offered with two Blade Battery sizes, and the configuration determines both electric range and charging capability. BYD reports a maximum system power of 209 hp (212 PS) and a 0–62 mph time of 8.3 seconds across the range.

SpecificationActive (7.42 kWh)Boost / Comfort / Sport (18.3 kWh)

The Active model’s 3.3 kW charger refills the battery from 15% in just under three hours. The 18.3 kWh trims add 39 kW DC charging that takes the pack from 10% to 80% in 26 minutes.

Cabin and Dimensions

BYD’s first B-segment hatchback measures 163.8 inches (4,160 mm) long and 71.9 inches (1,825 mm) wide, on a wheelbase of 102.8 inches (2,610 mm), with a trunk capacity of 15.0 cubic feet (425 liters). Standard equipment includes several features the company says are uncommon in the segment:

  • 12.8-inch touchscreen with Google built-in for Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Google Play
  • 360-degree camera with front and rear parking sensors
  • Heated seats and steering wheel, plus courtesy puddle lights
  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) for powering external devices

The car also draws on BYD’s wider DM-i lineup in Europe, which includes the ATTO 2 DM-i, SEAL 6 DM-i, SEALION 5 DM-i, SEAL U DM-i, and SEAL 5 DM-i. BYD says its DM technology has passed 8.5 million vehicles sold worldwide and has made it the top-selling plug-in hybrid brand in many markets.

When Can Buyers Order It?

BYD dealers in many European markets are already taking orders for the DOLPHIN G DM-i, with the first customer deliveries expected in late summer.
