ChargePoint Data Shows Charging Demand Outpacing Infrastructure

ChargePoint data reveals EV charging sessions grew 34% year-over-year, more than doubling the 16% growth rate of new ports, signaling a widening infrastructure gap.

ChargePoint released data from more than 100 million charging sessions enabled over the past year. The findings indicate that EV charging demand is growing significantly faster than infrastructure deployment, raising concerns about a widening gap between driver needs and available capacity.

Highlights

  • ChargePoint-enabled charging sessions increased 34% year-over-year, more than doubling the 16% growth rate of new charging ports on its network.
  • More than one million EV drivers now use ChargePoint on a monthly basis.
  • Plug-in hybrid vehicles account for 16% of all commercial AC charging sessions managed through the ChargePoint platform.
  • Global EV sales rose 20% in 2025, with European sales climbing 33% and the U.S. posting its second-strongest EV sales year on record.

Utilization Growth Exceeds Port Expansion

ChargePoint’s network added 190,000 new charging ports in the past year. However, charger utilization still outpaced the growth of new ports by nearly 20 percentage points. The company warned this bottleneck could worsen in 2026 unless the pace of charger installation accelerates.

ChargePoint CEO Rick Wilmer stated that new EV sales are no longer the primary benchmark for charger demand. He pointed instead to the cumulative number of EVs on the road as the more relevant metric. Wilmer added that those installing chargers in 2026 should see accelerated return on investment due to this utilization pressure.

Network Milestones and Environmental Impact

ChargePoint reported that nearly 60% of the 19.3 billion electric miles it has enabled over its nearly 18-year history occurred within the most recent two years. That acceleration underscores rapidly compounding demand on existing infrastructure.

Since its founding in 2007, ChargePoint estimates its network has helped avoid the following:

  • 714 million gallons of gasoline consumption
  • More than $2 billion in gasoline costs for drivers
  • Over 4.5 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions

Current Network Scale

ChargePoint currently provides EV drivers access to more than 900,000 roaming ports. The company also directly manages approximately 375,000 public and private ports. Across its total network, ChargePoint offers access to more than 1.3 million charging ports worldwide.

Industry Context

The data release comes amid broader momentum in EV adoption. Global EV sales increased 20% in 2025, with European markets leading at 33% growth. The U.S. market recorded its second-best year for EV sales. These trends suggest continued upward pressure on charging infrastructure across all major markets.
