A recent survey by Plug In America, a national nonprofit, reveals a significant demand among commuters for electric vehicle (EV) charging and incentives at their workplaces. The findings underscore the critical role employers can play in accelerating nationwide EV adoption. The survey gathered insights from over 1,620 individuals on their perspectives and challenges regarding workplace charging.
Key Highlights
- A new survey indicates that while most employees are aware of zero-emission transportation incentives, only 15% report that their workplace currently offers them.
- There is a strong desire for more support, with 98% of respondents without access to workplace charging stating they would be interested in having it.
- Similarly, 91% of employees expressed interest in receiving subsidies for purchasing or leasing an electric vehicle.
- The data suggests that workplace charging is a key solution to overcoming barriers to EV adoption, particularly for individuals who cannot charge their vehicles at home.
High Demand for Workplace Support
The survey highlights a major gap between employee interest and current employer offerings. A notable 11% of respondents were unsure if their employer provided any EV incentives, pointing to a need for better communication from companies about available benefits.
The interest in employer-provided support is substantial. Nearly three-quarters of employees who do not currently have access to EV incentives said they would be interested in them. The demand is even more pronounced for specific benefits:
- Workplace EV Charging: A staggering 98% of respondents without access said they would be interested or very interested in having chargers at work.
- EV Subsidies: 91% of those surveyed showed interest in company subsidies for the purchase or lease of an EV.
- Other Incentives: Employees also expressed interest in discounts for home-charging equipment, public charging memberships, EV rentals, and public transit incentives.
According to Joel Levin, executive director of Plug In America, reliable charging remains a primary barrier to EV adoption. “Since most Americans commute to work, parking their cars for hours each day, workplaces are excellent locations to charge, opening doors for anyone thinking about driving electric, especially those who cannot charge at home,” Levin stated.
Current Offerings and Satisfaction
While the demand for new programs is high, the survey found that employees who currently have access to workplace charging are generally satisfied. About half of all respondents reported having EV charging at their workplace. Among this group, 76% are satisfied with the reliability of the chargers, and 63% are satisfied with their accessibility.
Survey Background
The survey was conducted by Plug In America from March 31, 2025, to April 20, 2025. The majority of the 1,620+ respondents were EV drivers (82%) and frequent commuters (65%). This research was developed in partnership with Forth’s EV Adoption Leadership certification program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy.
