The City of Durham, North Carolina, has commissioned its first public DC fast-charging station in the downtown area. Finnish manufacturer Kempower supplied the hardware for the site at 111 W. Chapel Hill Street, located near the company’s North American headquarters.
Highlights
- Two-port DC fast charger now operational in downtown Durham.
- Installation supports city’s goal of 50% reduction in operational greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
- Kempower hardware selected for reliability and local manufacturing presence.
- Site operated by National Car Charging and open to all EV drivers.
Project Details and Location
The new station provides two CCS connectors capable of simultaneous charging. Positioned on West Chapel Hill Street, the location offers convenient access to nearby retail, dining, and parking facilities.
Kempower established its North American headquarters and production facility in Durham in 2023. The downtown charger represents the company’s first public installation in the city.

Alignment with Municipal Sustainability Targets
Durham’s Carbon Neutrality and Renewable Energy Action Plan sets a 50% emissions reduction target for city operations by 2030, with full carbon neutrality targeted for 2040. Public DC fast charging supports broader electrification of resident and visitor vehicles.
North Carolina currently hosts more than 306 public DC fast-charging locations with 1,385 individual ports, according to data earlier in 2025. Continued expansion remains critical for interstate corridors and urban centers.
Stakeholder Statements
Kempower North America President Monil Malhotra described the project as evidence of the company’s regional growth and commitment to accessible charging infrastructure.
Durham Mayor Leonardo Williams noted the charger’s role in reducing community emissions while highlighting local manufacturing and job creation.
National Car Charging CEO Jim Burness emphasized Kempower equipment reliability and the city’s leadership in transportation electrification.
Operational Information
The station operates 24/7 and accepts standard payment methods through the National Car Charging network. Drivers can locate the site via common EV charging apps and maps.
