Electric Era Boosts Retailer EV Charging

Electric Era is helping retailers like Love's Travel Stops deploy cost-effective, battery-backed EV chargers. The technology cuts operating costs and installation times while driving new in-store revenue streams.

Electric Era is experiencing rapid growth by helping major convenience store retailers, including Love’s Travel Stops, deploy and operate Level 3 EV fast chargers. The company’s technology is designed to cut installation and operating costs while unlocking new revenue opportunities, making EV charging a more viable investment for national fuel chains.

Key Highlights

  • Electric Era’s patented battery-backed DC chargers can reduce operating costs up to 70%.
  • The company has helped its customers secure $41 million worth of incentives from grant applications.
  • With restored NEVI funding, some retailers can achieve a positive ROI in less than two years from charging revenue alone.
  • Love’s Travel Stops recently commissioned an Electric Era charging station at its new location in Buena Vista, Colorado.

Love’s Travel Stops Partners with Electric Era

Love’s Travel Stops has commissioned an Electric Era charging station at its newest location in Buena Vista, Co., situated along U.S. Highway 24, a key rural connector between Denver and Colorado Springs. This deployment marks the 38th EV charging location for Love’s, which now operates over 150 EV chargers across 15 states.

“As part of our commitment to sustainability, we’re proud to bring this location online as we continue to bring more clean energy solutions to communities across Colorado,” said Ryan Erickson, vice president of Love’s Alternative Energy. He noted the location offers a seamless experience with weather-protective canopies, fresh food options, and clean restrooms.

A Strategic Deployment in Colorado

The new station was supported by grant funding from the Colorado Energy Office Direct Current Fast-Charging Plazas program, which utilizes both federal NEVI and Colorado state funds. The program aims to deploy public DC fast-charging systems in strategic and underserved areas.

The installation features a four-stall, 200 kW charging setup, wrapped in Love’s distinctive brand graphics. The chargers are equipped with both CCS1 (Combined Charging System) and NACS (North American Charging Standard) cables, accommodating a wide range of electric vehicles.

Beyond Cost Savings to Revenue Growth

While a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) was a primary motivator for Love’s, the long-term potential of the partnership proved compelling. Electric Era’s retailer-focused platform integrates brand experiences and loyalty program support, enabling Love’s to increase store traffic and grow non-fuel revenues.

“The best part of this engagement was helping Love’s build a broader marketing and loyalty program that accelerates their revenue past break even, and sets them up to generate stronger returns for the long haul,” stated Electric Era Sr. Manager of Enterprise Sales, Brittany Kaplan.

Full-Service Support for Retail Partners

Founded by former SpaceX engineer Quincy Lee, Electric Era was built to break down barriers hindering the growth of public EV charging. The company’s in-house deployment team, which includes project managers, engineers, and government experts, helps retail customers navigate permits, regulations, and funding programs. This comprehensive support has contributed to an 83% success rate for grant applications submitted by its customers over the past two years.

With $5 billion in federal NEVI funding restored, more fuel retailers are expected to explore EV charging to future-proof their businesses. “Now that NEVI is back, we expect more companies like Love’s to take a second look at EV charging to grow their businesses,” Kaplan added. “Fortunately for us, our solution and business model are aligned with the incentive program requirements.”
