Epic Charging, a leading EV charging software provider, has partnered with a prominent Chicago high-rise at 600 N Lake Shore Drive to complete one of the nation’s largest residential EV charger retrofits. This project successfully migrated 148 Enel X chargers to Epic’s advanced charge point management system (CPMS), equipping over a quarter of the 401-unit condominium’s parking spaces with smart EV charging stations. This initiative highlights the growing demand for sustainable, scalable EV infrastructure in multifamily residences.
Key Highlights
- Largest Residential Retrofit: The project is among the largest residential EV charger installations in the U.S.
- 148 Smart Chargers: Epic Charging migrated 148 chargers to its versatile CPMS platform.
- High Resident Demand: Over 25% of units opted for EV chargers in dedicated parking spaces.
- Seamless Transition: Epic’s CTO provided on-site expertise to reconfigure the network using OCPP.
- Utility Partnership: Collaboration with ComEd’s Voluntary Load Reduction Program supports grid reliability.
- Property Value Boost: EV chargers can increase property values by up to 15%, per CBRE (2025).
The retrofit followed the sudden exit of Enel X Way from the U.S. market, leaving multifamily properties in need of reliable charging solutions. Sunil Mehra, Board President of the 600 N Lake Shore Drive Condominium Association, praised Epic’s turnkey software and support, stating, “Epic Charging was the only company offering the fully integrated smart solution we wanted.” The system’s scalability ensures the building can add more chargers as demand grows, solidifying its status as a forward-thinking residence.
Supporting Illinois’ EV Goals
Illinois aims to have 1 million EVs registered by 2030, and this project underscores local residents’ commitment to that target. The high demand for EV chargers reflects both environmental responsibility and the practical benefits of EV ownership in urban settings. Epic’s collaboration with ComEd enables the building to participate in the Voluntary Load Reduction Program, earning $0.25 per curtailed kWh during peak-demand events while meeting residents’ charging needs.
Advanced Technology for Residents
Epic’s CPMS provides residents with a seamless experience through a mobile app and RFID cards, compatible with both existing Enel X Way and new Autel chargers. Residents can activate, schedule, monitor, and pay for charging sessions while optimizing electricity use during off-peak hours. The system’s load-limiting features reduce infrastructure strain, supporting future expansions. Additionally, advanced energy data and load management tools help lower electricity costs and enhance operational efficiency.
Epic Charging’s Leadership in Multifamily EV Solutions
Michael Bakunin, Epic’s Co-Founder and CEO, emphasized the importance of EV infrastructure in multifamily properties, which account for 31% of U.S. housing. “Successfully migrating 148 chargers at a sizable condo building in downtown Chicago further cements our leadership in the multifamily market,” Bakunin said. Epic’s open protocol system ensures compatibility with major charger manufacturers, delivering reliability and scalability for large residential communities.
