A recent survey by Vontier reveals that nearly 80% of electric vehicle (EV) drivers are willing to go out of their way to use public chargers located in safer environments. This statistic highlights a significant gap in the current EV charging infrastructure, emphasizing the need for improved safety measures at charging stations. The survey also indicates a preference for charging locations near shopping and dining options, pointing to potential strategies that could boost EV adoption.

Key Highlights:

  • 78% of EV drivers would choose a safer charging location even if it required driving further.
  • 67% of drivers prefer chargers near shopping areas, and 63% near dining options.
  • Over half of the respondents prioritize charging stations that offer protection from the elements, such as rain or snow.
  • Vontier is collaborating with industry giants like 7-Eleven, Circle K, and Shell to enhance safety and convenience at charging stations.

Vontier’s President and CEO, Mark Morelli, stressed the importance of addressing these safety concerns, stating, “It’s not just about plugging in anymore—it’s about peace of mind.” Convenience stores are seen as uniquely positioned to offer safer, more comfortable charging experiences while providing amenities that drivers value during their charging time.

The survey’s findings suggest that businesses that focus on creating safer and more convenient charging environments could see increased customer engagement and profitability. As states roll out federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program funds, Vontier is committed to partnering with businesses to develop charging solutions that prioritize safety and driver comfort.

Vontier’s efforts include the deployment of EV charging infrastructure at convenience stores and the introduction of innovative solutions like Gilbarco Veeder-Root’s Konect system, which integrates charging with existing fueling and payment services. This approach aims to provide a safe, convenient, and sustainable charging experience for EV drivers.
