Ford Announces New Affordable EV Platform

Ford announces a $5 billion investment in a new universal EV platform. The plan includes an innovative assembly process and a new midsize electric truck to make EVs more affordable.

Ford Motor Company has announced a significant investment of approximately $5 billion into a new electric vehicle strategy designed to make EVs more accessible and affordable. This initiative includes the development of the new Ford Universal EV Platform, a revolutionary Ford Universal EV Production System, and the introduction of a new midsize electric pickup truck. The investment is set to create or secure nearly 4,000 jobs across facilities in Kentucky and Michigan, reinforcing the company’s commitment to American manufacturing.

Key Highlights

  • Ford is investing approximately $5 billion across its Louisville Assembly Plant and BlueOval Battery Park Michigan.
  • The investment will create or secure nearly 4,000 direct jobs.
  • A new Ford Universal EV Platform will support a family of affordable, software-defined electric vehicles.
  • The first vehicle will be a midsize electric pickup truck with a targeted starting price of $30,000, launching in 2027.
  • A new Ford Universal EV Production System will radically simplify vehicle assembly for improved efficiency and quality.
  • Ford will be the first automaker to produce prismatic LFP batteries in the U.S.

The Ford Universal EV Platform

Engineered by a specialized team, the new Ford Universal EV Platform is built for efficiency and scalability. The platform is designed to reduce vehicle parts by 20%, use 25% fewer fasteners, and decrease the number of workstations in the plant by 40%. This streamlined approach is projected to result in a 15% faster assembly time.

Central to the platform are the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) prismatic batteries, which are both cobalt-free and nickel-free. These batteries form a structural sub-assembly that also serves as the vehicle’s floor, creating a low center of gravity for improved handling and a quiet, spacious cabin. Ford projects that the first vehicle on this platform, a midsize electric truck, will offer more passenger room than the latest Toyota RAV4, in addition to having a frunk and a truck bed.

This platform also focuses on performance. The midsize truck is targeted to have a 0-60 mph time as fast as a Mustang EcoBoost, combining utility with an engaging driving experience. Additional vehicle specifications will be released at a later date.

The Ford Universal EV Production System

Ford is also reimagining its manufacturing process with the new Ford Universal EV Production System. Moving away from the traditional single assembly line, this system uses an “assembly tree” concept where three main sub-assemblies are built on separate lines simultaneously. The front, rear, and structural battery sections are assembled independently before being joined to form the vehicle.

This innovative system uses large single-piece aluminum unicastings to replace dozens of smaller parts, simplifying construction. The process is designed to dramatically improve ergonomics for employees by reducing twisting and bending. The integration of the platform and production system could make assembly up to 40% faster than current vehicles at the Louisville Assembly Plant. A portion of this time savings will be reinvested into quality and cost improvements, resulting in a net 15% speed enhancement.

Investing in American Manufacturing

Ford is backing this new direction with substantial capital investments in its U.S. facilities. The company plans to invest nearly $2 billion in its Louisville Assembly Plant to produce the new midsize electric truck, which will secure 2,200 hourly jobs. The project is supported by an incentive from the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority. The Louisville plant will also be expanded by 52,000 square feet and receive significant digital infrastructure upgrades.

This investment complements the previously announced $3 billion for the BlueOval Battery Park Michigan. This facility will begin producing the prismatic LFP batteries for the new truck next year. Together, the investments total approximately $5 billion, strengthening the domestic EV supply chain and supporting thousands of American jobs.
