Ford Motor Company has issued a safety recall affecting certain 2023-2024 F-150 Lightning BEV models due to concerns regarding the front upper control arm ball joint nut. If this nut is not torqued correctly, it could lead to a partial loss of steering and vehicle control, heightening the risk of a crash. Owners of these vehicles are encouraged to follow recall guidelines and take immediate action to ensure their safety.
Key Highlights:
- NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V949000
- Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
- Components: Suspension
- Potential Number of Units Affected: 11,922
- Recall Reference: 24S76
- Owner Notification Letters Expected: February 3, 2025
Dealers will inspect the torque of the front upper control arm ball joint nut, replacing the nut or the knuckle assembly free of charge if necessary. Owner notification letters are anticipated to be mailed beginning on February 3, 2025, and any questions regarding this recall should be directed to Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Owners may also reach out to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for further information.
According to Ford’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report 24V-949, production records indicate that some of these F-150 Lightning vehicles may have a nut that did not achieve the correct torque during assembly. The issue arises from variation in alignment between the fastening tool and the nut, preventing proper tightening. If the nut loosens or detaches, it may cause the front upper control arm to separate from the knuckle assembly.
“If the ball joint nut is loose or missing, the driver may experience vehicle vibration and hear a clunk or rattle noise during suspension jounce and rebound.” This condition, if not addressed, can escalate into a partial loss of directional control.
Ford’s investigation revealed that the suspect vehicles were produced between November 5, 2023, and February 13, 2024. There have been two field reports and one warranty claim related to this matter, including one reported accident. The Field Review Committee approved a field action on December 13, 2024, in response to these findings.
As part of the remedy, owners will have their vehicles inspected at authorized Ford or Lincoln dealerships. If the torque inspection meets specifications, dealers will replace the nut. Should the nut fail the inspection, the knuckle assembly and nut will be replaced. Owners may qualify for reimbursement under Ford’s recall reimbursement plan if they previously paid out of pocket for similar repairs before receiving formal notification of the recall.
