Leapmotor Opens First European Innovation Center in Munich

Leapmotor opened its first overseas innovation center in Munich, deepening its European presence through the Stellantis joint venture as it shifts toward localized vehicle design.

Leapmotor has opened its first innovation center outside China, establishing a design and engineering hub in Munich’s Schwabing-Freimann district. The Leapmotor Europe Innovation Centre GmbH will focus on adapting the brand’s design language for global markets and integrating European design expertise into future vehicle development.

Highlights

  • First overseas R&D facility: The Munich center is Leapmotor’s first innovation hub outside China, signaling a shift from vehicle exports to localized design and engineering.
  • European talent integration: The location targets Munich’s established automotive design and engineering community for collaboration.
  • B03X concept previewed: Leapmotor’s head of global design used the event to introduce the B03X, a forthcoming SUV built on the brand’s updated design philosophy.
  • Stellantis partnership context: The center operates under the Leapmotor International joint venture with Stellantis, which handles the brand’s sales outside China.

Strategic Shift From Export to Local Development

The Munich opening represents a shift in Leapmotor’s international strategy. Rather than simply exporting Chinese-designed vehicles, the company aims to develop products informed by European design trends and consumer expectations. The Schwabing-Freimann location places Leapmotor near other major automotive design studios in the Munich area.

B03X SUV Previewed at Opening Event

Yu Shuyue, head of Leapmotor’s global design center, introduced the B03X concept at the opening. The SUV is positioned as a globally oriented model. However, the company provided limited technical specifications at the event, focusing instead on design direction.

Leapmotor described the B03X as building on its updated design language. Specific powertrain, battery, and platform details were not disclosed.

Broader Expansion Context

Leapmotor currently sells four models in European markets through its Stellantis partnership: the T03 city car, C10 mid-size SUV, B10 compact SUV, and C16 three-row SUV. The Munich center is expected to support future product development tailored to European and global preferences.
