GM and LG Unveil LMR Battery Innovation

General Motors (GM) and LG Energy Solution have teamed up to develop lithium manganese-rich (LMR) prismatic battery cells, a cutting-edge technology aimed at powering future electric trucks and SUVs. This partnership combines GM’s automotive expertise with LG Energy Solution’s battery manufacturing prowess to bring a game-changing solution to the electric vehicle (EV) market. The LMR technology promises higher energy density and lower costs, making EVs more efficient and affordable. Production is slated to begin in the U.S. by 2028, positioning GM as a frontrunner in EV battery advancements.

Key Highlights:

  • Enhanced Energy Density: LMR cells deliver 33% more energy density than top lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, boosting vehicle performance.
  • Cost Savings: By using more manganese and less costly cobalt, these batteries reduce production expenses significantly.
  • Timeline: Pre-production starts in late 2027 at an LG facility, with full-scale production following in 2028.
  • Extended Range: GM targets over 400 miles of range for its electric trucks, enhancing capability while cutting battery costs.

GM, a leader in automotive innovation with landmarks like the small-block V8 and OnStar, is pushing boundaries again with this initiative. The company’s Battery Cell Development Center in Warren, Michigan, will finalize the LMR design, ensuring it meets high standards. Meanwhile, LG Energy Solution, with over 200 patents in LMR tech since 2010, brings decades of battery expertise to the table. This collaboration strengthens domestic production and supports sustainable sourcing of materials like lithium and manganese from North America.

The LMR technology complements GM’s existing battery lineup, offering more options for truck and SUV buyers. It’s a step toward affordable, high-performance EVs, driving job creation and innovation in the U.S. battery industry.
