In a pioneering move to reshape the freight mobility landscape, HEINEKEN and Einride have embarked on their first cross-border electric freight journey. This initiative, linking HEINEKEN’s Den Bosch brewery in the Netherlands with the Duisburg distribution center in Germany, promises to reduce CO² emissions by approximately 930 tonnes annually. This step is crucial for HEINEKEN’s goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions across its value chain by 2040, with logistics accounting for 12% of its total carbon footprint.

Arjen van der Woude, HEINEKEN’s Director of Strategic Sourcing Supply Chain, emphasized the importance of decarbonizing logistics to meet the company’s net-zero commitments. “Decarbonization of logistics will play a key role in achieving HEINEKEN’s net-zero commitments. At this stage, battery electric is one of the best-positioned technologies to decarbonize road freight,” he stated, praising Einride for their comprehensive electric freight capacity services and their ability to streamline logistics.
The partnership’s initial phase features the deployment of Einride’s electric trucks, powered by renewable energy, alongside the establishment of necessary charging infrastructure. An inaugural fleet of five Mercedes eActros 300 trucks will manage ten daily full truck loads, covering about 540 km per truck. The operation is enhanced by the Einride Saga, an AI-driven system designed to optimize routes, reduce energy consumption, and accurately track emission reductions. Einride’s sustainable solutions have historically reduced CO² emissions by up to 95% compared to diesel trucks.
Robert Ziegler, General Manager EMEA at Einride, highlighted the synergy between the two companies: “At Einride, with a highly ambitious, sustainable driven team, we see HEINEKEN as an ideal partner on a clearly defined path to reduce emissions.” This collaboration not only marks a significant step towards reducing emissions but also sets the stage for expanding this eco-friendly initiative to more countries, fostering a greener, more sustainable logistics network across borders.
