Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has announced a preliminary agreement with Asahi Kasei to collaborate on manufacturing battery separators for EV batteries in Canada. This initiative marks a significant step in bolstering the supply chain for high-performance electric vehicle (EV) batteries across North America, a market anticipating robust growth in the coming years.

Key Highlights

  • Joint Venture: Honda and Asahi Kasei aim to establish a joint venture by the end of 2024 to produce battery separators in Canada.
  • Critical Component: Battery separators are essential in preventing electrical short circuits in lithium-ion batteries by ensuring cathodes and anodes do not contact each other while allowing lithium ions to pass through.
  • Shared Expertise: The partnership will leverage Asahi Kasei’s advanced material technologies and Honda’s electrification insights to manufacture high-quality separators for EVs.
  • Focus on Carbon Neutrality: Both companies are dedicated to advancing carbon-neutral goals through improved EV battery performance and sustainability.

The collaboration is underpinned by a mutual understanding of the importance of a reliable supply chain to support the escalating demands of the electrification market in North America. Discussions will focus on setting up a joint venture that will not only supply Honda’s North American EV production but also cater to other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

By combining their respective strengths, Honda and Asahi Kasei aim to produce superior separators that will enhance the performance and efficiency of electric vehicles. This partnership is expected to accelerate their initiatives towards achieving carbon neutrality.

Porous membrane, a key component of these separators, features a network of tiny holes essential for its function in battery technology.

Industry Insights: Hiroyoshi Matsuyama, Senior Executive Officer at Asahi Kasei Corp., stated, “Through this collaboration, by deepening our cooperation with Honda, we will play a role in the growth of the EV market as well as the energy transition in North America.”

Manabu Ozawa, Managing Executive Officer of Honda Motor Co., highlighted the importance of this venture in Honda’s broader strategy: “Through this initiative, Honda will continue creating EVs with greater competitiveness and fulfill demand for electrified vehicles in the North American market where continuous growth is expected into the future.”

This partnership between Honda and Asahi Kasei underscores a strategic move to enhance the production capabilities and performance of EV batteries, thereby supporting the anticipated growth and technological demands of the EV market in North America.
