Hyundai Motor Group has inaugurated Square Campus, a new €150 million facility at the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center (HMETC) in Rüsselsheim am Main, Germany. The expansion strengthens the Group’s European R&D capabilities, enabling the development of next-generation Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis technologies.
Highlights
- €150M investment adds 25,000m² of advanced R&D capacity at HMETC.
- Includes one of the world’s largest semi-anechoic chambers, EV charging lab, and simulator.
- Supports Hyundai Motor Group’s global zero-emission target by 2045.
- Enhances collaboration with Namyang R&D Center in Korea.

Advanced Testing and Development Capabilities
Square Campus represents the most significant upgrade to HMETC since its Round Campus opened in 2003. The new 25,000 m² complex houses the Group’s largest semi-anechoic chamber, enabling precision noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) testing under fully controlled conditions.
Additional infrastructure includes:
- Advanced powertrain dyno facilities compatible with EV, hybrid, and ICE testing.
- EV charging laboratory to support electrification development.
- High-fidelity driving simulator for virtual testing and validation.
- Electronics systems labs focused on OTA updates, cybersecurity, and ADAS functions.
These integrated capabilities allow Hyundai Motor Group to design, simulate, and validate vehicles entirely on-site, ensuring that European market preferences and regulatory standards are embedded from early development stages.

Sustainable Design and Workforce Growth
Built to reflect Hyundai’s environmental commitment, Square Campus incorporates recycled materials, photovoltaic panels, and heat pump systems to reduce operational emissions. This aligns with the Group’s strategy to achieve global carbon neutrality and zero tailpipe emissions by 2045.
The facility’s opening also supports workforce expansion — HMETC’s staff has grown by 20% since 2024, reaching over 500 engineers and specialists. This investment fosters collaboration across disciplines and strengthens ties with the Group’s Namyang R&D Center in Korea.
Continued European Expansion
Square Campus complements Hyundai Motor Group’s Nürburgring Test Center, which received a €13 million upgrade earlier in 2025, adding new laboratory and workshop facilities for performance and endurance testing. Together, these European sites form a cornerstone of Hyundai’s global R&D network, accelerating the delivery of advanced, market-specific technologies.
