Polestar will transition selected models in South Korea to the North American Charging System (NACS) in 2029, expanding charging options in a market that already offers more than 490,000 public charging points. Polestar also plans to install 400 destination-based chargers across the country by 2030, the company said this week. Drivers in South Korea can already locate available public chargers through the TMAP in-car navigation system for route planning.
Highlights
- South Korea offers more than 490,000 public charging points — roughly one charger for every 1.8 electric vehicles, according to Polestar.
- Selected Polestar models in South Korea will move to the NACS/SAE J3400 standard in 2029.
- The company plans 400 Polestar destination-based chargers across South Korea by 2030.
- In Europe, Polestar Charge has included more than 20,000 Tesla Supercharger stations since 2024, fully integrated into the app and Google Maps navigation by the end of 2025.
A Dense Public Charging Network
South Korea offers more than 490,000 public charging points, a level Polestar says makes the country the OECD member with the most advanced charging environment, at roughly one charger for every 1.8 electric vehicles. Polestar drivers can view available public chargers nationwide through the TMAP in-car navigation system, which the company says supports route planning around charger availability.
NACS Transition Planned for 2029
As its next step, Polestar will move selected models in South Korea to the North American Charging System — the NACS/SAE J3400 standard — in 2029, widening the range of compatible charging options. The company has said specific timing, vehicle models, and markets will be confirmed at a later stage. The transition runs alongside the planned rollout of destination-based chargers.
“Through access to the NACS charging environment in South Korea, combined with the planned installation of 400 Polestar destination-based chargers by 2030, we look forward to significantly elevating the charging convenience for Polestar customers in South Korea,” said Jason Ham, Managing Director, Polestar South Korea.
Aligning Charging Across Markets
The South Korea plan follows similar moves elsewhere. Polestar has offered North American customers access to the Tesla Supercharger network through a NACS adapter since 2024. In Europe, the Tesla network was first included in the Polestar Charge offer in 2024, giving access to more than 20,000 Tesla Supercharger stations, and has been fully integrated into the Polestar Charge app and Google Maps in-car navigation since the end of 2025.
“Enabling customers to charge their Polestar conveniently, whether at home or on the road, and providing access to the widest network coverage possible, removes one of the most common barriers to transitioning to EV ownership,” said Olivier Loedel, Polestar Head of Software Product Management.
