Hyundai Motor Group has announced a new partnership with the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to establish a collaborative research system focused on battery and electrification technologies. This alliance involves three major IITs: Delhi, Bombay, and Madras. A Hyundai Center of Excellence (CoE) will be established at IIT Delhi, fostering innovation tailored to the Indian market. Hyundai plans to invest around USD 7 million in this initiative over five years, starting in 2025.

Key Highlights:

  • Hyundai CoE to lead advancements in batteries and electrification with a focus on India’s unique requirements.
  • Three IITs involved: IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, and IIT Madras.
  • USD 7 million investment over five years, beginning in 2025.
  • Focus areas include batteries, electrification, software, and hydrogen fuel cells.
  • Technical and human exchanges between experts from Korea and India to foster talent.

The Hyundai Center of Excellence (CoE), set to be launched within IIT Delhi, will be supported through sponsorships from Hyundai Motor Group. The initiative’s goal is to drive innovations in batteries and electrification to cater to the distinct needs of the Indian market, strengthening Hyundai’s research and development activities in the region.

Hyundai Motor Group and representatives from the IITs, including Prof. Rangan Banerjee from IIT Delhi, Dean Sachin C. Patwardhan from IIT Bombay, and Dean Manu Santhanam from IIT Madras, attended a ceremony at IIT Delhi to sign an agreement establishing the ‘Hyundai Motor Group-IIT Hyundai CoE.’

Naksup Sung, Head of Hyundai Motor Group R&D Planning & Coordination Center, stated, “We are delighted to join forces with IITs, a group of leading engineering universities renowned for its exceptional education and research. We believe that Hyundai CoE will cultivate a strong network of talented individuals from India’s academic landscape, driving innovation and future growth.”

Hyundai plans to invest around USD 7 million over five years (2025-2029) to facilitate research in battery technology, electrification, software, and hydrogen fuel cell technologies in collaboration with the IITs. The focus of this research is to advance India’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem, supporting government initiatives to promote EV adoption and infrastructure.

The collaboration will also involve the Centre for Automotive Research and Tribology (CART), India’s only EV-focused research institute, based at IIT Delhi. This partnership aims to promote academic and industrial cooperation, focusing on joint research initiatives. It will also facilitate technical and human exchanges between Korean and Indian experts, involving lectures, technical exchange programs, and specialized training.

This initiative aligns with Hyundai Motor Group’s broader objectives of expanding its presence in India and boosting Hyundai Motor India Limited’s (HMIL) commitment to the country. Hyundai CoE is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening research capabilities, fostering talent, and enhancing development of India-specific products, while furthering Hyundai’s mission of mutual growth and collaboration in the region.
