Key Highlights:

  • 2024 Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems: Recognized for powertrain innovation and performance.
  • E-GMP Technology: Dual motors, maximum interior space, and optimized performance.
  • Eco-friendly Performance: Combines electric power with motorsport-inspired N technologies.
  • Industry Recognition: Hyundai has won 17 awards since 1995.

The Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems competition highlights vehicles with improved range, fuel efficiency, and advanced powertrain technologies that significantly enhance performance. The IONIQ 5 N, Hyundai’s first electric performance vehicle, exceeded expectations with its innovative blend of sustainability and high-performance engineering.

Ricky Lao, director of product planning at Hyundai Motor North America, remarked, “The 2024 IONIQ 5 N has surpassed all internal expectations for Hyundai’s first electric performance vehicle.” He added that its eco-friendly approach combined with motorsport-bred N technologies positions the IONIQ 5 N as a strong player in the competitive EV market.

Wards’ Editor-in-Chief, Bob Gritzinger, praised the vehicle, stating, “This is a stellar example of what an engineering team can do with a battery-electric vehicle when given carte blanche to make it look, feel, sound, and perform like its internal-combustion brethren.” Judges appreciated the visceral driving experience, including simulated internal combustion engine sounds and the feel of a dual-clutch transmission.

Judge Christie Schweinsberg echoed this sentiment, saying, “Holy cow – the G forces on my body! Yowza! Crazy! I felt like I was getting a facelift.”

Evaluations for the 2024 awards took place over the summer, with judges driving the vehicles to assess performance, powertrain advancements, and overall value. The 2024 awards mark the competition’s 30th year, with 34 nominees in contention. Vehicles with all-new or significantly improved propulsion systems were eligible for consideration.

According to Wards contributor and judge Drew Winter, “The IONIQ 5 N creates engaging new driving experiences for performance enthusiasts.” He noted that the vehicle’s feedback, including haptic responses and audio cues, is designed to enhance high-performance driving.

The 2024 Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems awards ceremony will take place on October 10, 2024, at The Battery Show in Detroit, MI.
