Karma Automotive introduces Karma Connect, a proprietary Vehicle Data Management (VDM) and Over The Air (OTA) services platform. This innovation redefines the ownership experience and marks Karma’s entry as a business-to-business technology partner.
Key Highlights:
- Karma Connect: A Vehicle Data Management (VDM) and Over The Air (OTA) services platform.
- Acquisition: Follow-up from the February 2024 acquisition of Airbiquity assets.
- Service Enhancement: Provides standard service, content, and feature renewal for Karma vehicles.
- Technological Insights: Offers OEMs rapid insights from Karma’s affluent customer base.
- Industry Impact: Positions Karma as an ally in the industry’s transformation.
Karma Connect supports Karma Automotive’s strategy initiated by the acquisition of Airbiquity’s assets in February 2024. This acquisition included technology assets, intellectual property, key technical employees, and ongoing OEM service contracts.
Karma Connect will come standard in Karma automobiles, ensuring continuous service and feature updates through next-generation OTA data transmission, central to Software-Defined Vehicles. Karma’s commitment to product longevity extends beyond typical vehicle obsolescence, aiming for a timeless ownership experience. This includes advancements in vehicle touchpoints such as color, material, and personalization.
For other OEMs, Karma Connect provides statistically relevant insights from a highly affluent customer base prone to early product adoption. Technologies deployed in Karma vehicles first ensure that partners receive production-hardened software, reducing the risk of new technology adoption and accelerating innovation cycles.
Marques McCammon, President of Karma Automotive, emphasized the industry’s rapid technological transformation: “The automotive industry continues to undergo massive transformation, adopting new technology at a pace never seen before. Each of these new innovations challenges manufacturers’ deeply-rooted systems, architectures, processes, and supply chain. The goal is to pivot to the future while sustaining profitability today. Software-Defined Vehicles are the future, but it’s yet to be fully realized because the cost of change, at least in the near term, is erosive to profits. It is a classic innovator’s dilemma but playing at industry scale. Karma Connect demonstrates the role Karma Automotive will play as an ally, helping manufacturers meet the demands of tomorrow, right now.”
Karma Connect offers two distinct services:
- Karma Flash: Delivers OTA updates to Karma Revero vehicles (MY2020 and later) via Karma Cloud Services (KCS). This service fixes issues and adds new features and capabilities, similar to smartphone app updates.
- Karma Recon: Provides robust data analytics through reciprocal data transmission. It retrieves onboard data, diagnostics, and analytics, using AI-based fault-filtration to predict potential failures and prompt precautionary service. This also helps engineers address issues at the source.
Karma vehicle customers will first experience Karma Flash with the launch of “Tune,” a new cabin audio experience for the Karma Revero sport sedan. This upgrade, engineered by Master & Dynamic, will be available to Revero owners (Model Year 2020 and later) and as a retail option on the 3rd Generation Karma Revero, delivering in the 4th Quarter of 2024.
About Karma Automotive: Karma Automotive, California’s first and only ultra-luxury automaker, produces electric and E-REV vehicles at its facility in Moreno Valley, CA, with its executive and design headquarters in Irvine, CA. The Karma portfolio reflects California’s innovation and boldness. The 3rd Generation Karma Revero, the world’s first luxury plug-in hybrid, will debut in the 4th Quarter of 2024. Future models include the Gyesera four-seater (2025) and the Karma Kaveya super-coupe (2026).
