LG Energy Solution is making significant strides in constructing a $5.5 billion battery manufacturing complex in Arizona, marking a notable expansion of its U.S. operations and emphasizing its commitment to technological leadership and market competitiveness in the electric vehicle (EV) and energy storage system (ESS) sectors.

Key Highlights:

  • Construction on schedule: Set to complete in two years with the first hiring wave by late 2025.
  • Innovative production: Launching 46-Series batteries for EVs and LFP batteries for ESS.
  • Strategic location: Strengthens LG’s presence in North America’s largest ESS market.
  • Significant capacity: Expected annual production of 53GWh, enhancing LG’s market position.
  • Job creation: Several thousand new positions to bolster the local economy.

During a recent progress update, LG Energy Solution highlighted the ongoing development of its ambitious project, expected to fortify its leadership in product innovation and technology within the U.S. market. The complex, situated near Queen Creek, Arizona, is poised to enhance LG’s competitive edge by hosting its first stand-alone cylindrical and ESS battery plants in North America.

The cylindrical battery facility, named LG Energy Solution Arizona, aims to pioneer the production of 46-Series batteries for EVs, a critical component of LG’s innovative product lineup. This move is anticipated to maintain momentum in technological advancements and manufacturing capabilities following the commencement of mass production in Korea.

Meanwhile, the LG Energy Solution Arizona ESS facility will focus on manufacturing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pouch-type batteries for energy storage systems. This initiative represents one of the first ESS-exclusive production endeavors globally, strategically positioned to meet the surging demand for locally manufactured batteries fueled by U.S. clean energy policies.

Upon reaching full operational capacity, the complex is expected to significantly contribute to LG’s annual production capabilities, offering a diverse and competitive product portfolio that includes pouch-type and cylindrical batteries for EVs and LFP batteries for ESS in North America.

Officials, including LG Energy Solution’s leadership and Arizona’s Governor, underscored the project’s pivotal role in advancing green energy infrastructure, job creation, and the transition to clean energy. With this development, LG Energy Solution not only reinforces its market presence but also supports Arizona’s and the broader U.S. economy’s clean energy objectives.
