The Lion Electric Company, a prominent manufacturer of all-electric urban vehicles, has begun delivering its latest product, the LionD school bus, to customers in California. This new model is a significant addition to the school bus segment, offering seating for 83 children and a range of 155 miles on a single charge. The LionD underscores Lion’s commitment to eco-friendly transportation, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 23 tons annually per bus.
Nicolas Brunet, President of Lion, expressed his enthusiasm: “We’re excited for customers to deploy their LionDs and experience all that they have to offer. These electric school buses, which are in high demand on the West Coast, are manufactured in the United States at our Joliet, Illinois facility.” He added, “The zero-emission LionD will improve the well-being of our customers and society for years to come.”

Innovative Features of the LionD
The LionD boasts several safety-focused innovations, such as improved air quality, reduced noise pollution, an extra-wide center aisle, enhanced rearward driver visibility, a programmable low-speed sound generator, and an ergonomically designed driver cockpit. Notably, it is the first Lion bus with a driver-centric cockpit and a liquid crystal display interface tailored for electric operational performance.
Built on the success of the LionC, the LionD incorporates a design specifically for electric power, offering lower energy and maintenance costs compared to diesel buses. Its rust-free composite body panels, modular lower skirt, and one-piece seamless fiberglass roof significantly reduce maintenance needs.
Comprehensive Customer Support
Lion Electric ensures that customers transitioning to the LionD receive extensive support. This includes assistance with charging infrastructure (LionEnergy), financing (LionCapital Solutions), grant applications (LionGrants), and comprehensive training (Lion’s BrightSquad) along with proprietary EV telematics (LionBeat). The company’s approach not only sells buses but also ensures their effective and efficient use.
The LionD’s introduction is timely, as various federal and state incentives, including the EPA’s Clean School Bus Program and California HVIP, offer financial support for eco-friendly transportation solutions, making the transition to electric buses more accessible for school districts and contractors.
