In a move aimed at accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) within the heavy-duty truck industry, Mack Trucks has unveiled a pioneering mobile off-grid charging system. Designed to seamlessly integrate into the Mack® MD Electric truck, this initiative marks a significant step towards facilitating e-mobility for Class 6-8 vehicles. By offering a hands-on testing platform for both customers and dealers, Mack aims to demystify the transition to electric for large fleets.
Key Highlights:
- Mobile Charging Solution: Mack introduces a novel off-grid charging system integrated into a Mack MD Electric truck.
- Ease of Testing: Customers and dealers can utilize this system for demonstrations and testing without the need for existing charging infrastructure.
- Sustainable Power: The charging unit features a renewable propane-powered generator and a 120kW charger.
- Versatile Electric Trucks: Mack’s MD Electric can toggle between Class 6 and 7 configurations, boasting up to 230 miles of range.
- Recognition and Production: Both the MD Electric and the larger LR Electric model feature the distinctive copper-colored Bulldog, symbolizing Mack’s commitment to electric drivetrains.
Announced during the American Trucking Associations Technology and Maintenance Council Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana, this initiative underscores Mack Trucks’ commitment to sustainable transport solutions. “This system will allow the customer or dealer to charge trucks…without having charging infrastructure readily available at their site,” stated Ryan Saba, Mack Trucks’ energy solutions manager.
Although the truck-charger combo is not currently slated for commercial release, Mack is exploring ways to support interested customers through supplier relationships. This approach reflects a broader strategy to ease the industry’s transition to e-mobility by addressing one of the key barriers to EV adoption: the availability of convenient charging solutions.
The MD Electric and LR Electric trucks, produced in Virginia and Pennsylvania respectively, represent Mack’s foray into electric vehicles, following the successful launch of the Mack LR Electric in 2021. With enhanced battery capacity and range, these vehicles are poised to set new standards in the heavy-duty EV sector.
