Sensata Technologies has announced a significant milestone in the electrification of heavy-duty vehicles: its High Voltage Distribution Units (HVDUs) are now enabling megawatt charging on electric trucks in production. These advanced units are designed to meet the rigorous demands of next-generation electric trucks, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-performance power management.

Key Highlights

  • Sensata’s HVDUs enable megawatt charging for heavy electric trucks.
  • The HVDUs are now being used in production vehicles.
  • They are custom-designed for heavy-duty electric commercial vehicles.
  • The units integrate in-house produced components like fuses, contactors, and control electronics.
  • Sensata will showcase its HVDUs at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo from April 28-30 in Anaheim, California.

Advancing Electric Truck Technology

As global regulations push for reduced greenhouse gas emissions, truck manufacturers are rapidly developing battery electric vehicles capable of megawatt charging. These electrified heavy vehicles require large batteries, up to 1 megawatt hour (MWh), and aim for charge rates of up to 3 megawatts (MW). Sensata’s HVDUs are engineered to handle these high-power levels, providing robust solutions for power distribution and charging.

Sensata’s HVDU product family includes Power Distribution Units (PDUs), Charge Units (CUs), and Charge PDUs (CPDUs). These units are tailored for managing electrical power in heavy-duty electric commercial vehicles, distributing power to the battery during charging and to various vehicle systems during operation. The HVDUs integrate a range of in-house produced components, such as fuses, contactors, Electric Vehicle Charge Controllers (EVCCs), Insulation Monitoring Devices (IMD), current sensors, and control electronics. Additionally, they feature in-house developed systems like liquid cooling, IP-rated enclosures, optimized busbars, and wiring.

These units are designed to operate efficiently under high electrical loads and harsh environmental conditions, ensuring reliable performance and longevity. Sensata’s innovative thermal management solutions and enhanced safety features make the HVDUs ideal for the demanding requirements of heavy vehicle applications.

Industry Impact and Future Showcase

Mark McBrine, Product Line Owner – Electrification at Sensata, emphasized the importance of these units: “Our high voltage distribution units will play a crucial role in advancing the electrification of heavy vehicles, and we are proud to contribute to a more sustainable future on leading manufacturer’s next-generation trucks.”

Brian Wilkie, Executive Vice President, Performance Sensing, Vehicle Business, added, “The use of our megawatt charging solutions on electric trucks in production represents a significant milestone for Sensata’s electrification portfolio and highlights our commitment to innovation and to solving our customers’ toughest challenges.”

Sensata will showcase its HVDUs at the upcoming Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo in booth 6811 from April 28-30 in Anaheim, California. This event provides an opportunity for industry professionals to see firsthand how Sensata’s technology is driving the future of electric transportation.
