Accelera™ by Cummins, Daimler Truck, and PACCAR have chosen Marshall County, Mississippi, for their advanced battery cell manufacturing. This venture is part of a broader effort to promote zero-emission commercial vehicles in the United States. The decision, heralding a new era in automotive manufacturing, is expected to generate over 2,000 manufacturing jobs and potentially more, depending on future market demands. The factory, with a capacity of 21 gigawatt-hours (GWh), is slated to commence production in 2027.
This collaborative effort, announced in September 2023, aims to scale up and provide cost-effective battery cell technology. The joint venture will evenly distribute ownership among Accelera, Daimler Truck, and PACCAR, each holding a 30% stake. The focus will be on lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery technology, crucial for commercial battery-electric trucks. EVE Energy, with a 10% stake, will contribute its advanced battery cell design and manufacturing expertise.
Jennifer Rumsey, Cummins Chair and CEO, emphasized the project’s alignment with their Destination Zero strategy, aiming to lead the industry towards a decarbonized future. John O’Leary, President and CEO of Daimler Truck North America, highlighted the importance of localized battery cell production for cost-effective decarbonization of fleet operations. Preston Feight, CEO of PACCAR, also expressed excitement about the expansion in Mississippi, underscoring the state’s role as a valuable business partner.
This venture represents a major step in the commercial vehicle sector’s shift towards zero-emission technologies, aligning with the Paris Climate Agreement’s objectives to reduce carbon emissions. The completion of this transaction is contingent on standard closing conditions, including approvals from regulatory bodies and the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS).
