Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada (MMSCAN) announced that sales of the significantly updated Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) will commence in March. As the brand’s flagship model, this latest iteration integrates advanced electrification and all-wheel control technologies to optimize daily EV usage and long-distance hybrid performance.
Highlights
- Battery Capacity: Increased by approximately 13% to 22.7 kWh.
- EV Range: Extended by 18% to 72 km (NRCan official rating).
- Audio: Premium Yamaha system now standard across all trims.
- Market Leadership: Canada’s best-selling PHEV for three consecutive years (2023–2025).
Technical Specifications and Performance
The updated Outlander PHEV features substantial powertrain enhancements designed to improve efficiency and driving dynamics. A larger 22.7 kilowatt-hour drive battery replaces the previous unit, representing a 13 percent increase in capacity.
This upgrade directly translates to an extended electric-only driving range. According to Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) ratings, the vehicle now achieves an EV range of 72 kilometers, an 18 percent improvement over the prior model.
Beyond the powertrain, Mitsubishi has implemented chassis refinements. Optimized suspension components and newly adopted tires have been utilized to enhance ride comfort and overall stability.
Standard equipment has also been upgraded. A premium audio system, jointly developed with Yamaha Corporation, is now included across all trim levels, enhancing the interior experience.
Market Position and Sales Data
Canada remains a critical market for the Outlander PHEV, recording the largest sales volume globally for the model. The vehicle has secured its position as the country’s best-selling PHEV in its category for three consecutive years, based on 2025 sales data.
Demand in the Canadian market is driven largely by the need for capable four-wheel-drive vehicles suitable for severe winter conditions. The Outlander PHEV addresses this with its twin-motor 4WD system and Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC), which provides confident handling in adverse weather.
Global Rollout Strategy
Since its original launch in 2013 as the world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV, the Outlander PHEV has accumulated approximately 430,000 global sales across more than 60 countries.
While Canada receives the updated model in March, Mitsubishi Motors plans a sequential rollout to other key markets. The updated model is scheduled for introduction in the United States, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and Chile within fiscal year 2026 (April 2026 to March 2027).
