Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) has achieved a historic milestone with the 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander and Outlander Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) being co-named Green Car Journal’s 2026 Family Green Car of the Year. This marks the first time in the award’s 21-year history that sister models have shared the prestigious title. The Outlander PHEV’s fourth consecutive win underscores Mitsubishi’s commitment to environmentally friendly, family-oriented vehicles, while the forthcoming mild-hybrid Outlander introduces innovative efficiency.

The Green Car Journal’s Family Green Car of the Year Award recognizes vehicles that combine environmental performance with style and versatility. The 2026 Outlander PHEV impressed with upgrades like a larger battery capacity, increased all-electric range, revised styling, improved driving dynamics, and a premium Yamaha audio system. Meanwhile, the 2026 Outlander’s mild-hybrid powertrain represents a significant step toward greater fuel efficiency and lower carbon emissions, aligning with Mitsubishi’s sustainability goals.
Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal, praised the Outlander models, stating, “Adding a mild-hybrid powertrain in the Outlander is viewed as an important evolutionary step toward improving efficiency and decreasing carbon emissions.” He also highlighted the Outlander PHEV’s enhanced electric range and styling updates, solidifying its position as an outstanding environmentally positive family vehicle.
The 2025 Outlander PHEV currently offers 38 miles of all-electric range and a total hybrid range of up to 420 miles, complemented by refreshed interior and exterior designs, retuned steering and suspension, and the innovative Yamaha audio system—a first in the U.S. automotive market. Both models feature Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) system, ensuring superior handling and confidence in diverse driving conditions.
