Mullen Automotive, Inc. has strengthened its U.S. battery production capabilities with the purchase of additional battery line equipment from Nikola Corporation. The newly acquired assets will enhance Mullen’s Fullerton, California facility, supporting the company’s goal of developing next-generation American-made battery packs and modules. This investment aligns with Mullen’s strategy to reduce reliance on imported battery components while advancing solid-state polymer battery technology.
Key Highlights:
- New assets include a high-volume standard battery chemistry production line and an electro-dynamic shaker system for battery testing.
- Upon installation, Mullen’s Fullerton facility will feature:
- Two high-volume standard battery chemistry production lines.
- High-precision, low-volume R&D lines for both standard and solid-state polymer batteries.
- A full battery testing laboratory for current and future projects.
- Production is expected to begin in the second half of 2025.
- Mullen is pursuing $55 million in matching funds from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to support its U.S.-based battery and pack production.
“We continue to execute our plan of transitioning to American-made battery components, and we are doing it right here in Southern California,” said David Michery, CEO and chairman of Mullen Automotive.
Mullen’s Growing U.S. Presence
In September 2023, Mullen purchased battery production assets from Romeo Power, a Nikola subsidiary, for $3.5 million, acquiring equipment, inventory, and intellectual property for high-volume EV battery pack and module production. In December 2024, the company submitted a modified plan to the DOE, incorporating its Mishawaka, Indiana, and Fullerton, California facilities into its U.S. battery production strategy.
